Hi all. I'm brand new to 40k and these forums. Before I begin with my proposed army list, let me give you a tiny bit of backstory. I am 1 of 8 friends who recently decided to get into 40k. Two of these friends have been playing for years and had been looking for more people to compete against. They finally convinced us all to give it a try. We played using their armies and all loved the game, so we all decided to jump in. Of the two experienced players, one plays solely orcs, the other plays with either chaos marines or necrons. The other "noob" players chose to purchase, Tau, Eldar, Nids, Ultramarines, Bloodangels, and Dark Eldar for myself. So I will be playing against a variety of armies regularly. Since almost all of us still needed to aquire models, we set a goal of 750pts by march 1st and then we would all progress to 1000pts by the end of july and so on progressing in size every couple of months untill we all have enough pieces to be able to play the large scale battles. Therefore, when reviewing my list, please keep in mind that this army not only needs to be able to compete on it's own, it also needs to be able to serve as a good starting point for a much larger army in the future. With that said, here's what I'm looking at for my first 750pts. Please feel free to comment good or bad as my gaming experience is very limited at this point and any pointers from more veteran players would b greatly appreciated.

HQ:
Archon with blast pistol, Agonizer, ghostplate, clonefield, haywire grenades - 130

Elites:
Incubi (5) w/ 1 Klaivex (demiklaives and Onslaught) - 160

Troops:
Wyches (8) w/ haywire grenades, Razorflail (1), Hexatrix w/ blast pistol and agonizer - 149
Kabalite Warriors (10) w/ darklance(1), blaster (1), Sybarite w/ ghostplate - 150

Transports:
Raiders (2) w/ flickerfields and nightshields - 160

Total: 749

As the army is expanded I would like to Reavers, expand the incubi, maybe add another warrior squad... o and the voidraven bombers look tempting too

The basic idea is get the close combat units in fast with the transports and let them do what they do best. The warriors would not be in a transport and will be bringing up the rear with their ranged weapons.

i dont know anything of dark eldar but, you start with 1 HQ and 2 Troops so thats good.. and you will need more raiders.. everything in your army should have transports.. put the archon in the incubi squad and hunt down their HQ's with this combined squad.. Don't try to outshoot the Tau player.. you will never succeed in this.. get them in cc as fast as possible.. the reaver parchuse is not a bad idea at all.. and a trick i use is this: hold 1 objective and let your opponent have one for him but keep an eye on it.. battle to have an equal amount of objectives.. and in the last turn you turboboost your reavers to the first objective.. contest it and you win the game this only works in the last turns.. otherwise they will be gunned down by the unit holding the objective.. hope this helps a bit

In my opinion, Incubi should be saved for much higher point games, if used at all. I'venever been able to make them work - I prefer Bloodbrides.

750pts and just starting out:

1)archon, good load out the way you have him but he's an assault beast, the blast pistol is not needed, give him combat drugs (125 pts)

2)4 Incubi, the upgrades are not needed at this level and you get more bang for your buck in larger squads - make sure to get them a venom, you can get an Eldar vyper and convert very easily and give it double spinter cannons (153pts)

3)5 warriors with a blaster in a dbl splinter venom (125pts)

4)8 wyches in a raider, one with razorflails, hekatrix with an agonizer, all in a raider (180pts)

5)Hamemonculus with a liquifier (60pts)

6)Ravager - 3 dark lances (105pts)

748 pts of nastiness. Depending on you drug roll, you can decide where you want the archon and hammy to ride. The ravager is a must, for its points its the best way to take out armor that you have. The venom can wreck havoc on hvy wpn teams - an average of 4 wounds on anything at 36 inches, and remember since they count as defensive you can move 12, get your incubi out to fight and the venom can still fire at 12 shots.

As far as cash wise to buy this army - its about $225 before taxes and at standard pricing. Its a strong base for an army - you have long range with the ravager and venom, and a ton of assault. Wyches with a pain token to start are a beast to get rid of, if you can keep them in assault. The archon and incubi will wreck marines.

Good Luck!

At 750 points, I would do a couple things.

1) Use Warriors as your base troops choice. Unless you absolutely know you want a Wych army at high levels, its the smarter choice. When you progress to higher points, if you no longer want to use Warriors, those models can easily be used as Trueborn, so they aren't wasted. If you buy Wyches, you really can only use them for them or Bloodbrides, and tbh Bloodbrides are only rarely better than Trueborn.

2) Save Incubi for later purchases. Again, it's more of a principle of making a list with models that aren't very unique and can be used at higher levels.

3) Unless you plan to hit 1850 or 2k points, go with triple Ravagers. At 750 you should have a minimum of one, probably two of them. They are simply that good. If you need anti-tank, they have 3 Dark Lances each. if you want anti-infantry, a Disintegrator Ravager can and WILL wipe any MSU MEQ squad, as well as put a hurting on Nids MCs.

Like I said above, you need to focus on two things at this points level imo: a list that is comepetitive, while also being adapatable at higher levels. I made that mistake slightly when I started buying my Dark Eldar and now have a spare Raider I never use (granted, I run a Hellion army, so it is a bit..odd).

mmmk... some very good points and lots to think about. So here's what Im thinking now.

HQ:
Archon (agonizer, ghostplate, clonefield, haywire grenades, combat drugs) - 125pts.
Haemonculus - 50pts

Elites:
Incubi (4) - 66pts

Troops:
Kabalite Warriors (8) - 72pts
Wyches (8) w/ haywire grenades, Razorflail (1), Hexatrix w/ agonizer - 134 pts

Heavy:
Ravager - 105pts

Transports:
Venom (Archon and Incubi) - 55pts
Raider 1 (Wyches and Haemonculus) w/ Flickerfield - 65pts
Raider 2 (Warriors) w/ Splinter racks and flickerfield - 75pts

Total - 747pts

I need to free up a few points to give the Haemonculus a weapon, but after playing with a setup like this a few times I can fine-tune some gear issues. Does this look a bit more solid? I know I still have that extra Raider in there rather then a venom, but I can't see myself not using it in the future as I the army larger. I hadn't thought about pairing a Haemonculus with the wytches for the pain token, great idea.

Once I get the first 750 done, I think I'll add another Ravager, and then incorporate Reavers and bulk up the existing squads such as the Incubi and Warriors. However, I'll save that for a future discussion. Thanks for all the advice.

I've been starting with a Haemonculus, to hand off his PainToken first thing, giving my wyches a big boost. Consider that over the Archon. Also, the model is an easy conversion from one of the Raider's 'crew' that hangs off the side.

Sybarite just for leadership, yes?
