A friend and I were having a heated debate last night on which army is the least expensive to build, I know for a fact that IG is the most expensive to build but I can't figure out what the least expensive to build. Anyone able to shed some light on this topic?

That is kind of a hard question to answer one way or the other because all armies can become pricey fast depending on what your buying.

Somewhere.

Space Marines, I suspect. Between Assault on Black Reach and second hand deals everywhere, you can assemble, frompersonal experience, a 2000 points forve for under £100.

Maybe Eldar? A lot of their elites are pricy. dark Reapers, Warlocks and Farseer models aren't too expensive to buy.

I think about things on a $ to point ratio. If something is worse than $1 to 3 points, it is a ripoff and hard to justify buying it.

I was leaning towards the Necron as being least expensive because noone plays them really anymore and everyone is selling their stuff cheap. Another reason I am having this debate is because I want to build a new army and I don't want to spend a fortune on it. I want to have money left over to put into my new car. So if anyone has some suggestions please feel free to pass them my way.

I'd say Necrons, mainly because, as my friend and I just found out, you can make a 1000 point army out of the battleforce with a little bit of conversions.

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.

You can make a fully legal 500 pts army out of the Tau battleforce box. How many points are you looking for in this new army?

Can you quantify the question a little more? To how many points - 1500? Are we talking just brand new models, or eBay specials? With conversions or as they come out of the box?

Space Marines are pretty cheap - you can use two AoBR sets to make a 1500 point army if you spec the bejeezus out of it.

That and how competitive you want it to be. If you were to buy a box of say...Imperial Guardsmen, you either just bough a 50 point PIS, or you could have bough a 160 point tricked out Veteran Squad is unlikely to be competitive in the slightest.

The other important question is are you looking to expand this army after you buy the initial point value. Sure Necrons can be pretty cheap to build 1,000 points but you'll be doing a lot of converting if you want to keep them cheap much past that. If you chose to convert Warriors to Immortals you save a boatload. If you want to buy real Immortals you're paying about $0.50 per point and that's not cheap.

Necrons is certainly a candidate.
But the starter box when trading the included Orks provides a decent and cheap start of an SM army.

CSM Khorne is also rather cheap. You can use everything in the starter set and Khorne Berserkers are really cheap for 21 point models. Alternatively you could just buy a battle force and kitbash everything inside into Khorne Berserkers, as well as get a rhino (which you will need) out of it.

Or you could buy a Stompa and upgrade it to a Mek Stompa with Lifta Droppa etc and you've got an easy 700 points. Buy two, add AoBR set and you have an army.

So, quantify the question and you might get a useful answer!

There was a thread about this before, although more for fun than creating an actual army.

You can create a valid 1000 point army for less than $100, if you really like Khorne Berzerkers.

Well, three boxes of Terminators and one HQ (Belial) give a solid DA army.

That's $170 if you're buying straight from GW. It's about 750-850 depending on what equipment you buy them. If you get Black Reach models you can build a Deathwing army for super duper cheap though. It's like what, $15 for 5 Black Reach Terminators on eBay/bitz sites? Between them and some Black Reach dreadnoughts you could build a 1000 point army for well under $100, depending what you do for Belial.

Necron Battle Force plus a Necron Lord will total up at around 112$. It's got around 750 or so points, possible more.

Edit: With those 2 things Alone you get 1032 pts.

Chaos Battleforce can yield something like 18 berserkers and 10 Possessed through kitbashing and a Rhino. Add on Kharn (one of the cheaper monetary wise characters) and you have a 1000 point force (given the bare-bones cost of these things, you have 50 points to spend elsewhere, which would be good for Power weapons and Power fists for the Zerkers).

4 Boxes of SW terminators plus Logan, Nijal, and a rune priest can yield you a loganwing cheap.

Possibly the new GK army will be even more elite and possibly cheaper.

The Grey Knights will be when they're released.

Plastic 2 wound Terminator troops will soak up alot of points. While not costing you too much (relativly speaking of course cost of this hobby is now almost prohibitively expensive.)

Otherwise necron are cheapish, especially on ebay.

I imagine a 60 pink horrors and fateweaver would be pretty cheap to do. Not very effective though

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

I would say space marines. You can find AoBR marines for dirt cheap. Plus given the fact that so many people play marines, and they have barely changed throughout the editions, you can come up with second hand marines really easily. With two complete AoBR space marine sets, you can make about 850 points of marines. Thats pretty good.

Maybe we should do a challenge... best army for £100 from GW prices then we could vote on them... people with the power any ideas?

Orkyben is doing an imperial fists army for less than £150 but is buying 2nd hand.

I would have to say Necrons a Battleforce & Lord and you're already got an army! Not to mention you only need a few paints to make em look good.

But if you want any elites you better start saving up...
