WYSIWYG is enforced in a lot of high-end tournaments. I want to build a Straken Command Squad, and one of they key pieces to this are Carapace Armour. I have tried dry-fitting the torsos of Cadian models onto the rest of the Catachan sprue (to keep the Catachan feel) and it honestly looks like crap. Here is my question:

Do you think that I would be strongly held to the WYSIWYG rules and lose my armour save if I built them normally and indicated clearly on my list and to my opponent that they are wearing Carapace Armour?

My fine detail green stuff skills are limited, what are my options if the answer to the above is, 'yes'?

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

As long as you pay for the upgrade, and have a way to clearly distinguish them from the rest it should be no problem. I would also make sure to ask the TO, and even if they say yes, make sure to tell your opponent before the game and ensure that they are clear which models are carapace armor.

If you end up having to display it, you could always use the catachan company commander's torso (the 'too small for me' carapace vest) from the command squad. you'd have to chop it off the legs if you don't want everyone in the same pose, but a quick search of ebay found at least 5 of the bits available from one person.

if you don't like the look of the cadian torsos (i agree especially since you end up with a double belt buckle modelled depending on the parts used), i'd model them differently than other squads. maybe hollow out some marine chest pieces as a breastplate, greenstuff on something other than a t-shirt on the models, model them behind small barricades on their bases, etc. as long as you have *something* to make them stand out that is instantly recognizable as "hey, they look more resistant to damage!" by your opponent, you're fine.
