How do you guys choose what armies you play? Is it stupid to choose an army based on the way the models look?

I hope not. I started black templars because I think they look badass.

What army did you have in mind?

I have a big problem with indecisiveness, its like everyday I change my mind about what army I want to play. I would like to have a Nid army but my painting sucks, I like the Tau because I like the battle suits....

I have a friend with a nid army which is all just basecoated, then drubrushed twice with successive lighter coats of turquoise. It takes him a couple of minutes per model, and sounds pretty lazy, but the swarm all together looks great. Really eerie and monochrome.

I'm trying to nag him to go back and paint more detail on the bigger models, but honestly the army looks fine, and whilst that style of painting is not really to my taste, it shows how simple and effective nid schemes can be.

Also, don't worry, your painting will quickly improve once you get going. Just pick the army you think is coolest and go for it!

Just don't choose Space Marines, just don't do it man.

Friends don't let friends play Space Marines. Seriously, like EVERYONE and their mom plays them.

I would take offense to that, but your not wrong.

I play Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Imperial Guard. Yeah i'm an imperium fanboy, I like space wolves because barbarians in space, sounds badass to me, Dark Angels, meh, looked cool, sounded cool, works for me. And then Imperial Guard, well they're just meatshields, and that's why i like em.

You have lots of posts for not playing. Do you already have an army?

Pick what models you like first and foremost, then pick which army special rules you like. That should end your conundrum pretty quickly. If you like the Nid models, go for them-some of the most beautiful (hey, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder, after all) sculpts out there-Warriors, Trygons and Carnifexes are gorgeous.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Try to open your decision making.

1. Look of army - something you currently do. I dislike 80% of GW's minis so for me it was Eldar. Love Eldar.

2. Gameing - Some armies, although "cool" to look at, may not be as fun to play with. Tau for example are very "shooty" so you may get bored of that. Take things like that into consideration.

3. How would you paint your army? I wouldnt worry too much about your skill. Think of what colours you will use and just enjoy the painting without worrying what others think. Thin down your paints and paint neatly and they should look fine.

4. If you really, really can't decide what to choose. You may not be into 40k as much as you think. Try another game.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

As of right now, just looking through the galleries and browsing peoples work logs I am really growing fond of the look of the Tyranid. I really don't know how they play but I do plan to catch some battle reports on youtube to see... and I am going to buy the codex and give it a read.

My first army was a shared Chaos army I built with my boyfriend. I get exactly what you mean about your Necrons; it's "mine", and we've won tourneys with it, but I wanted to branch out on my own, so I went with Witch Hunters. I like the Sisters fluff, I like that they are chicks, and I love playing with the useless Inquisitor Lord. So yeah, I think lots of people choose armies they just like the look or sound of.

Case in point, I've never played WFB but I am going to build a Skaven force because I love the way they look.

All Me
Zollern Inquisition 3500
Order of the Living Spring 2200
Hive Fleet Yilbegan (we done graduated) 3000
Just starting up some Skaven in ye olde WHFB

Shared Army
Black Legion 5000+

That's almost entirely why you should choose an army. If you don't like the aesthetics, then you're going to hate painting them. If you hate painting them, you'll have a grey horde that just spawns apathy. Playstyle matters too, but 40k is very much a game about cool stuff beating the crap out of other cool stuff.

I mean I really like the look of the imperial guard army, reminds me of my childhood playing with those little green army men but I don't know if I am ready to sell all the stuff I have in my life to build that expensive army. ROFL.

That's why you build armies piecemeal over the course of some time. I've got like 3000 points of Guard, but I've done that over the course of about two years.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Absolutely, positively not. Remember, you are going to spend time building and painting them. Liking the way they look is a huge part of what makes an army appealing. Don't even bother about how powerful or competitive an army is. If you like an army collect that army.
