I was just wondering what's the general opinion on using an older codex instead of the most recent one. For example, someone would walk in to a game with an army that is built with 3rd/4th edition codex even when you know that the guy would have the newest one available too.

Thoughts?

On moon miranda.

Why? I mean I guess if someone wanted to use the 3.5E CSM book for an Emperor's Children noise weapon army or something I could maybe see it, but outside of that there's generally little reason unless you have an army very specifically built to the older book.

In terms of abusiveness, there'd be relatively little chance. Even the old 3.5CSM book, renknowned for its power, would be rather pants on a 5E table.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

I'd prefer to play against a 3.5 Chaos or LatD army than against either of the 4th edition Chaos codices.

I wouldn't mind as long as you let me know why and what you're using ahead of time. No using current rules though - for instance, if you took the old Marine doctrine where they could have an apothecary in each squad, he doesn't give them FnP like nowadays.

This situation is going to be weird, to say the least. I'd allow it personally. Who knows, they might even have an army and codex for Squ

Well, it's an interesting idea. Other 3rd edition Codices remain in use, after all. They are pretty self-contained. As long as you remain consistent and WYSIWYG...

Which codex did you have in mind?

I'd agree, if someone brought in a 3rd ed codex, I'd gladly wipe his ass with it. And by ass, I mean army off the board.

For how much people whine about anti-codex-creep when their codex comes out, codecies only get more competitive for their rules edition they came out in.

I mean, a fight between my current new codex, 5th ed guard list against my old codex, 4th ed list would be a comical flop for my old list.

As long as they didn't mix codexes, it's fine, right? I mean, I played against somebody using a 13th company EOT codex-it was fine with me til I found out he meshed it with the new space wolves codex and used rules from both. I still ate him alive with blood angels, but come on-that ain't cool. But yeah, old codexes are fine by me-maybe not for tournaments, unless it's OK'd by EVERY player and the TO at the tourney, but if it is, then I'm cool with it. For free play it is always acceptable.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Clear it with your opponent first.

Anything pre-3rd edition is out, since the rules don't really follow through at all.

You may find yourself at a disadvantage, but there are plenty of old codexes that would still be viable today (I'm thinking my old Ulthwe army with Black Guardians and a real Seer Council)

Also, you don't get any of the new updates to your army. You have to play with the rules as written, unless you can also dig up the old updates to that codex.

I was mostly thinking about Blood Angels codex. I know that 4th edition pdf-codex is less powerful than current one but I like it more for some reason.

And apparently not everyone is happy about it.. I was denied a game for trying to use 4th edition BA codex.
Ohwell.. guess I'll use the new codex then.
