Dumb question, but I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree:
If a model is the target of a rending attack, and the attacker rolls 6s for the to-wound roll, can they take an invulnerable save?

Yes. Editing to add: Unless a(n invulerable) save is specifically mentioned, it is not ignored.

As was said, rending only makes you count as AP2 versus things with an armor save, and you get +d3 penetration on targets with an AV. Unless the weapon you're using specifically says it ignores invul saves, the enemy will get their save.

Aha! Thanks guys. I'm usually the "rendee", rather than the "render", so I was a bit fuzzy on the actual rules.

Rending wounds count as power weapons in close combat - not AP2.

Is there any difference there? For CC at least

Functionally no, semantically yes. The rulebook makes the distinction when describing Rending in the shooting section vs the assault section.

presumably they might throw a 'this can take armor saves against power weapons' rule or the like at some point.
Hmm, that's have an interesting effect on boneswords in the metagame...

Functionally yes; AP plays no part in Close combat, if a Close combat weapon were rending and we only had the shooting rending rules, then the Close combat weapon would only get the auto-wound but the enemy model could save against that wound.

You completely missed my point.
I said that yes, Azure is correct that within the respective confines of shooting and close combat, AP2 and 'functions as a power weapon' (respectively) have the same effect, but that it IS important to make the distinction for completeness' sake when discussing the specifics of the rules.
Shooting weapons with AP2 have exactly the same functional result in shooting as CC weapons that 'function as a power weapon' in close combat, with respect to armour saves. The semantic difference comes into play because they do not mean the same thing outside the bounds of their own defined areas (namely shooting vs. assault).
Is that clear enough?

Now we are into a Semantic discussion as to what "functionally" means.
The context of your statement was that the difference was pure Semantic, and that AP2 weapons would function n exactly the same way as power weapons in close combat(which we know is not true, plasma pistols do not function as power weapons).
I was only correcting your statement at face value, not your meaning.

The rulebook makes the distinction when describing Rending in the shooting section vs the assault section.
I didn't think this was a particularly unclear statement, but evidently it was.
Thank you for the correction.

I guess if they ever make a rule or piece of wargear that raises (reduces) a gun's AP by 1, then rending will only be AP 3. No such item exists I think.
They didn't make it count for AP 1 so it doesn't get a bonus on the vehicle damage table for AP 1.

Even if a ranged rending weapon did become AP1; it would not do so against vehicles.
The only thing rending(either variety ranged or close combat) does against vehicles is the additional d3 to armor penetration rolls.

Bear in mind that Necron WBB works fine against AP2 weapons, but doesn't work against power weapons. Do the difference has mechanical relevance too.
