So, started a new army. Love the new dark eldar models, so I've been working away at a new army. I stopped for a while, realizing that dark eldar players need skill and finesse. I have neither. Then I picked up the codex again and realized cool models > all. At least now I have an even better excuse when I lose.

(Pics below)

I like the green, and purple works well as a secondary colour. I'll post some wyches in a bit. I need to borrow my daughter's camera, my iphone oversaturates the images.

Cheers,

Borrowed my daughter's camera for some new pics. Damn. I need one of these. Takes much better photos than my iPhone.

Here's the WIP of a wych. I'm planning on using Duke Slithcus, and wanted a serpent theme. The poisonous green seemed like it would be fun to paint, with purple as my secondary colour. I've been doing a variety of skin tones, most very pale but some darker browns as well. I like the variety.

Here's the pics I took of the viper. It doesn't pick up the glare that the iPhone did, so I'm much happier with the quality of the photos.

Mastiff, I'm always on the lookout for new stuff from you! Unfortunately, I think wyches might be a bit nerfed in 6th edition. Have you gotten the rulebook / had any thoughts on what direction you'll take it with the new rules? Allies could open up some really cool conversion potential...

Thanks RiTides I'm not sure what'll happen in 6th. I'm not too worried, since I'm not too far along with the army that I need to make any drastic changes to adapt. I'm expecting to have two units of wyches and two units of warriors in Reavers as my core, then expand from there.

My biggest hang-up with the army is anything that involves Fine-cast. I've looked at a lot of packages at several stores, and have always been less than impressed. I really like the concept models, but at $20-30 per model I want ALL of the fingers to be included, y'know? I'm getting picky in my old age.

I'd like to include a Talos, and have a tonne of Confrontation Alchemist minis that would be suitable for wracks, grotesques and a talos. So that's an option I'm mulling over. I have 20 - 30 Clones of Dirz, so two full units of wracks would be easy, and I could even use some Dirz as great-looking Haemonculi. (Hmmm... Dakka's spell-check wants to change that word to "Emasculation". Ironic, no?)

Even have a few Tigers of Dirz that would make great, er, skinless hound-thingies that the beastmasters use. So, between the great GW plastic kits, and replacements from Confrontation, I should be able to build a decent army without resorting to any half-assed poorly-cast resin

I've got these:

Khymera? They're a bit big.

Wracks? They're a bit small.

I also have one of these, currently unpainted, that I'm thinking of using for my Talos:

That green is lovely - very poisonous and nasty without it being overly bright and happy. Very Joker-ish with the purple accent too.
Frankly jealous of your symmetrical freehand too ; )

Lovely painting! The vemoons are beautiful, but for me the wych green is a little to much like vomit... Anyway, they're your beautifully painted models! Nice cool stuff! Subsicribed! Look forward to some more work! Another exclamation mark! Would you mind telling me where you got those 'Kymerae' models and giving a size comparison shot at one point? Look forward to updates!

Pic of a Raveger commander. The green's a little less acidic, and the black uses shadow grey for a cooler tone.

Thanks, Urien_Rakarth. The Tigers are from Rackham's Confrontation, unfortunately the company went belly-up a few years ago. They are quite a bit larger than GW's khimera (think horse-sized)

Rakarth was always one of my favorite minis. I did this guy about ten years ago, but might repaint him to match my army's colours.

I'm considering using him as Eldrad (which is where the helmet is from), and having a dozen slave guardian eldar as "allies". More out of spite than for good gaming reasons I like the idea of keeping his spirit on a leash, and forcing him to work for the dark eldar.

I love these, I'm actually making my own dark eldar and painting them at the moment. I'm curious how you got the effect you did on the Venom it looks really finely done xD

Same as well I'm curious what you plan to be using as bases :3

I'm loving the purple shading on the green hull of the Venom. I haven't quite got round to using techniques like that. The freehand is excellent, I'd like to do something similar on my Falcons.

Been strangely productive the last few months. I just really enjoy the DE models.

Still working on the riders, but I'm really happy with the skyboards:

I may use the Duke Slithicus rules for the Archon, when I get past 1250pts for games:

Hard to see in the sunlight. I'll need to take pics later.

And hey! I'm going to start running painting clinics in Calgary, at Imaginary Wars, if anyone's interested.

Blast from the past!

Great looking stuff mate. I really love the green on the canopy. I don't think I've seen anything like this for a vehicle. Painterly, but very elegant.

What's your plan for the basing?

Thanks guys.

My plan for basing? Avoid it as long as humanly possible!

Probably dead brown/yellow leaves and some dark grey rocks for a muted platform. I don't want to use a lot of green grass that would blend in to the green armour.

I'll wait until I can do most of the army though, otherwise I'll change my mind several times and end up redoing the bases repeatedly instead of painting new minis and getting the army completed.

This model was Rackham's special edition 1,000th sculpt, the Nefarious Clone. I've been trying to figure what to do with it for about five years. He fits perfectly as a Talos for the Dark Eldar.Posing him on a small pillar was an unfortunate choice, but it gave the sculptor the opportunity to wrap the tail around it so I can see why they did it.

The camera washes out the highlight areas, so brighter areas lose all detail. I'll have to see if I can borrow my daughter's camera, it takes much better pics

Beautiful colors you've got going on, and I'm glad you finally got some basing done!

Looking forward to seeing the Hellions finished - skyboards were an extremely promising start.

Better Talos and Ravager pics with my daughter's camera.

I'm considering leaving the clear aerial bases alone, rather than basing them. I'll admit it's partly because I'm lazy, but it's also so the table colour shows through. Any thoughts?

I saw the Scourge models and really wanted to do something with them. I don't intend on using scourges in my army, but thought they would make good conversion material for Incubi and blasterborn.

I was a bit disappointed that there was only a single blaster int their, but otherwise was ver happy with the models.

I wanted to include Incubi in my army, but every time I looked at the Finecost box I'd be overcome by a red mist and want to punch a baby. $55 for poorly-cast models is just insulting. The sculpts themselves aren't terrible, but they seem to be struggling a bit to lift the Klaivexes, let alone swing them overhead. One of the reasons I love the dark eldar, and GW's plastics, is for the dynamic models. The existing Incubi seem better suited for Fantasy, where consistency in pose is an asset. I wanted them charging into battle, with their weapons raised overhead for a killing blow.

So here's what I ended up with;

The Klaivex is a blad from a hellion, with one blade removed. It makes a long, two-handed weapon that looks balanced but not too heavy. I love the helmets; they justify the models alone. Overall, they look like spiky, evil Howling Banshees.

I'll complete the base this weekend, wanted a proof-of-concept before starting throwing paint on the others.

The downside is the armour is lighter than a regular Incubi model, so I presume the lights on their backs are shield generators. Ah well, it's all make-believe anyways.

I would paint the base part like the rest of the army and the stem in a matte black. That should result is less specular reflections (especially if the stems have these air bubbles (or whatever it is) in them). That way all the bases look more unified.

As I already told you, I really love your color scheme on the Dark Eldars. That green tone is fantastic and works really well with the purple.

The "Talos" is wonderful, I have always liked this model, and your painting fits him perfectly.

Regarding the bases, don't be lazy. Don't keep the antigrav ones transparent. If you hate basing, buy resin bases. It could save you lots of time.

That Incubi is excellent and I'm delighted to see some old Conf models get back on the board.

It is an oath we honour.
