I play CSM and although I've played with standard Marines (who get pulverised if assaulted) I've taken to useing a large group of chosen with the MoK to soak up enemy charges instead. They're still pretty vulnerable to being charged by the likes of Banshees or Autarchs with retinues, so I was wondering if anyone had a good solid CC unit that could take a charge and still live to fight on.

Well some units are just designed to destroy others in assault. Most units aren't going to like getting charged by banshees. You could try a walker?

It depends by whom you are charged.

Yeah that's a fair point, but you could still have it block weaker units using its assault radius.

Generally though, when a unit is really strong in assault, I try to kill it with shooting instead. Don't know if that's an option for you OP? What units are you talking about, specifically?

Everyone is vulnerable to a banshee charge as they have I10 on the charge! They also have power weapons. What causes them problems though is high toughness and invul saves.

For CSM the obvious choice is a unit of plague marines for their T5, or Thousand Sons for T4, 4+ invul.

An IG power blob can take any unit that isn't dishing out 60+ attacks on the charge.

Grey hunters can take an assault pretty well too, given their counter charge and 2 ccw, and often mark of the wulfen

for chaos, plague marines are your best bet, then counter charge with zerkers.

Oh man! Thats the best advice Ive ever heard on here. To bad the OP plays Chaos and doesnt get any of those units. Hmmmm

As much as I hate how all the chaos powers can now play with each other, Id second the plague marines/Thousand sons. Id lean more to the sons, for 2 reasons. 1. they are Inv and 2. they are not nearly as common as plague marines.

@ Monster Rain
Mostly Eldar and on occasion Daemon Army.

Have tried the Plague Marine-Berserker Combo. Seems to work! Also sticking Kharn in there has had a positive result.

I originally just wanted to find out if anyone had come up with a solid, Squad with Character combo that oozed resilience.

Thanks for the advice

I hate to say it, but Abaddon with a bunch of Thousand Sons would probably be your best bet with CSM for taking a charge.

They all have a 4+ invulnerable save!

As a charging commander myself, the thing I LEAST like to charge (well, other than walkers), is things with invul saves.

A MoT demon prince with wings is a GREAT tarpit unit. Maybe not against certain units, like a flock of thunder hammer termies, or something, but against things like power blobs, well... hitting on 5's, wounding on 6's and a 4++ really makes it hard for power weapon attacks to stick...

In Chaos, a unit of Plague Mariness or MoT Terminators. Optionally led by Abaddon or Kharne if you want super killiness and don't mind the pricetag.

Nuglings and Plague Bearers take Banshee charges pretty well. The invulnerable save and high T of plague bearers will take out the banshees attacks. No wasted points on armor either.
Plague Marines take Banshee charges the best for the points if you want humans.

Statistically, against banshees with a doom-seer in tow, the thousand sons survive better than the plague marines by half a dude. Either unit will still be reduced to about half strength before they swing back.

With Doom 9 banshees on the charge kill 3 plague marines, on average. The Exarch kills .99 of another. Call it 4. If it's a standard 7-model unit of PMs with fist champ, the survivors kill 1.5 Banshees back and hold. Then the banshees get counter-charged. Of course, that's assuming that the PM's Rhino gets popped first and the banshees get the charge. If the Banshees lose their ride and get shot, they're screwed.

Plague marines are good all-round for this - T5, defensive grenades and FNP make them tough against anything except monstrous creatures, indeed near invulnerable against anything without power weapons. Daemon princes are also good since WS3 opponents will need a 5+ to hit, then a 5+ or 6+ to wound.

Well, it's average. Banshees CAN wipe them out, but could also whiff and die. Having used Banshees as a mainstay unit in my Eldar for years, I remember more of the latter, of course.

It must be all those memories I have of Banshees wiping out 10 man Immortal squads before they can swing.

Of course, the kid I was playing had the ability to roll 6's like it's nobody's business. I even made him use my dice for a couple of games with the same result.
