Ok so i decided to get some SM's together, only a small force about 1000-1500 points. and jumped on the current Blood Angels frenzy down my local GW, i figured i would start with 10 man assault squad and got myself a few hand flamers to perk them up a bit.
So the thing is i really only want them to a basic tabletop quality and am not getting all OCD on them, as such i primed them then spray gunned them, problem is yellow helms on my assaults, i cant seem to get a nice coating with yellow.

So far i tryed thining/multiple coats and undercoating the helm with my fave light colour undercoat astronomican grey, both got poor and patchy results.

any advice would be great

thanks

How bright do you want the yellow? I usually make a 1:1 mix a 1:1 of Iyanden Darksun/Snakebite Leather as miy base coat. Keep it thin since your dealing with a foundation paint. If there are any spots underneath that are still visible, I will go back over them with a drybrush of the same color. Next, begin working up to the tone you want. If your just wanting a tabletop quality, I would suggest drybrushing your tones as you increase the amount of yellow you use. This will give you lots of depth in your color and will look great from a distance. Finally you can apply a very light drybrush of a highlight on the yellow. I would suggest a mix of 1:1 Bleached Bone/Sunburst Yellow. Best of Luck!

Keep me updated on how your progress goes and if your satisfied with the end result. If you can, take a pic or two of the final product too!

If possible, post an image of what you have, gives a better idea of where you are at. And what to suggest.

Another option, if its too bright, would be to do a light brown-colored wash, or a dark yellow, etc. and then a quick highlight. Element 206 has the right answer, but I'm guessing you dont want to go to that effort per model. My solution then is as mentioned; if its a bright yellow helmet, then give it a medium brown/yellow wash and a quick drybrush to bring out highlights. If you want it dirty and gritty, then heavy brown/yellow wash and sparing use of dry brush.

My yellow

1. Base coat white
2. Watered down golden yellow (May have to go a second coat to get it even)
3. Sepia wash
4. Highlight if you want

Comes out like this:

"No pity. No remorse. No fear." - Black Templar battle cry

"Heroes of Armageddon! You have withstood the evil savagery of the Orks, and they have nothing left for you to fear. So raise high the black banners of vengeance - now is our time." - Commissar Yarrick

Thats basically how I do it but without the wash. White base + watered yellow works wonders, not to mention its BRIGHT without a wash

UPDATE: i kinda killed my assault squad, sprayed em with tamiya ts italian red, citadel paints (which about 98% of my paints are) dont seem to wanna bond to the tamiya to well. Regardless, i kinda like the look it gives, due to washes pooling on the armour and generally acting very strange it has gave a nice weathered look. i was considering buying some of that putty/clay type paint stripper for plastic models but may just push forward and see how they turn out.
will try and get some pics up when i make a bit progress on the yellow but time has been a bit consumed finishing Yarrick for Feb MoM the last few days.

I use a lot of "difficult to paint" colours - yellow, red and white. I am fairly pleased with my results.

The trick, I find is to use very watery paint. I use just the tip of the paint brush to apply the paint. Any brush strokes will create lines or let the base coat show through.

I apply the paint in what seems too thick, but as there is alot of water, which evaporates away, it actually comes out smooth and not too thick.

not my best painting but the pic I have available . . .

p.s. This was a single coat of GW yellow / red on a black base.
