I started playing this again on a whim, and woah is it a blast from the past. And fething HARD too, I mean geeeeeze. Anyone have tips on how I can make sure my people don't die so much?

I loved the original X-Com: UFO Defense (called UFO: Enemy Unknown outside the US and Japan).
Terror From the Deep was another classic. It was WAY more difficult. I played it quite a bit as a kid, but I don't think I ever managed to beat it.
Apocalypse wasn't as hard as Terror From the Deep, but it was much more complicated. It was too much for my young brain to really grasp. I ended up spending most of my time raiding the Cult of Sirius and not being able to do much to stop the aliens. My games usually ended when I decided that nuking every other organizations buildings was a reasonable course of action.
So, I sadly can't provide any tips. But, I did find what appears to be a rather well written strategy guide.

You should post a review in a few weeks. I'd be interested to see if my memories of this game are accurate.

I did much better as a kid back when it was released, unless memory is betraying me by gilding itself as it is wont to do. Regardless, I've managed to shoot down and capture the first two kinds of UFOs, and reserached the brainsucker pods, but I take far too much attrition...

They are, and it's a first-person shooter. So they aren't at all, really.

Curses on them for it, too. Why the heck does everything have to be a shooter now a days? Leave it alone, says I.
Though.... was it Irrational or 2K who were working on it?

Well, if I recall correctly, real time mode is MUCH easier than turn based one. I started playing turn based because of Enemy Unknown and Terror but it was just so painful. I had huge problem with brainsuckers until I started playing real time.
Always have some decoys in a team, preferably androids in heavy armour. Don't kill anything with them, just lure enemies out and use them as spotters.

It's the 2K studio that did Bioshock 2, so they're no strangers to ruining great franchises.

Not only is it first person shooter, it also is set in the past rather than the future, it doesn't have the same retro style, and pretty much everything in the story is different.
Thus why it's called XINO-- X-Com In Name Only.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Set a droid up front with a pair of stun guns, then back him up with a a couple machinegunners, and then a sniper set for accurate fire to deal with any more dangerous threats.

Well, they seem to be doing ok with Duke.
Hopefully this XINO, as Melissia puts it, will increase interest in X-Com games enough to warrent a true sequel?

If I remember correctly, overwatch is your friend.
Camp in a corner and send out bait to lure them into your LOS... then kill them with massed firepower.
Works well till mid game when they start lobbing AOE weapons at you.

OH god, that reminds me... I lost half my team in a raid on the Cult of Osiris because they had a rocket launcher and managed to hit dead on as I was going through a door...

Another issue is that X-Com in the normal canon is a multinational organization, but in the new canon it will be a branch of the US government. This pisses off no shortage of non-US fans of the series.

It might have been because I was incredibly young, but I thought that X-Com was basically all that was left of us, who were fighting back, in the original canon.
