Subject: Battlefleet Gothic, advice.

Hello everyone,
I'm looking at starting Battlefleet Gothic and am seeking advice from people who actually know a monkeys about it.
I've developed a Fleet list for 2000pt strong force and I would like advice on ways to improve it, for example have i put in ships that should be avoided, or not put in a must have ship etc. The fleet is as follows;
1x Retribution Class Battlehsip -- 345pts
2x Dictator Class Cruisers -- 440pts
2x Gothic Class Cruisers -- 360pts
1x Mars Class Battlecruiser -- 270pts
3x Lunar Class Cruisers -- 540pts
TOTAL -- 1955pts
I would like to defend my choices, unless they are insanely noobish... in which case it was deliberate to catch out noobs /shifty-eyes
I put the Dictators in to add some strike craft in I could use to help the Retribution along, pair them with the Lance batteries on the Gothics and i figured i could rain some copious amounts of hurt onto anyone stupid enough to approach my Retribution, or to help my Retribution punch a nice ragged hole through my enemies fleet.
And i put the Lunar classes with the Mars, so that i could combine Lance, Gun and Strike craft and make a nice angry fist to pound my enemy to bits with.
As I said I'm here for advice so any you could spare would be most appreciated... Also, i'm not going to lie, this fleet, I have found, would be quite cheap to purchase and money is an issue for me.
Thankyou for any advice

You need to buiy an admiral with a fleet this size.
Gothics are inferior to Lunars, but they are ok. Frankly I am biased against them, but they do pose a problem if facing Eldar.
Swords and Dauntless are worth having.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. |

Although, if this is for a campaign, the admiral will be free.
I agree with Orlanth about needing more escorts. I would recommend dropping one Lunar and a Gothic and making up the points with your escort of choice (I would go with Swords).
12 launch bays is adequate for a fleet this size, but only just. You should realize that most fleets will have an ordnance superiority over you at this points level.
1 Nova Cannon in 2,000 point is a little low...taking a Dominator would help with this.

The Gothic is a great gunship!
I prefer Gothic/Dominator combo over 2 Lunars.
By a margin.
The IN needs escorts. Get in Swords/Cobra's.

How about the following, as i said money is an issue so i ubered up the admiral instead of adding more ships... but i can always weaken the admiral and add more ships later.
Retribution Class Battleship 345pts
Solar Admiral + extra roll 175pts
Dictator Class Cruiser x2 440pts
Dominator Class Cruiser 190pts
Sword Class Frigate x3 105pts
Mars Class Battlecruiser 270pts
Lunar Class Cruiser x2 360pts
Sword Class Frigate x3 105pts
TOTAL 1990pts

I like this list better. I think it is reasonably balanced, and you can pick some pretty good smaller fleets (1,500 or 1,000 pts) from it as well. You have several options for future expansion; light cruisers, more escorts, or a different BB to name a few.
EDIT: I forgot to point out that you will be running a bit short on weapons batteries; unless you have a source of extras from somewhere, you might be have to take at least one Gothic. This isn't too much of a problem, as they are the same points as a Lunar. A better break down might be this:
Retribution
2xDictator
Lunar
Mars
Dominator
Gothic
This would have added advantage of keeping your two Nova Cannons (which will want to stay as far back from the enemy for as long as possible) operating together.

Heya, I'm now writing a list for my dad, he wants to play Chaos so i must appologize to Combat331 for mercilessly ripping off his fleet but it looked good, I have expanded it to 2000pts and I'm wondering if this list is ok... If any ships should be replaced etc any advice would be most appreciated ta.
Desolator Class Battleship 300pts
Warmaster (Ld 9) 100pts
Mark of Nurgle 35pts
Repulsive Class Grand Cruiser 230pts
Murder Class Cruiser x4 680pts
Devastation Class Cruiser x2 380pts
Infidel Class Raider x3 120pts
Idolator Class Raider x3 135pts
TOTAL 1980pts

It's Combat311 not Combat331. I think you should drop the escorts and add another murder cruiser and add only two infidel. The only reason I add escort ships is left over points.

Don't you have to have escorts in a fleet?

Chaos Fleets don't seem to be interested in escorts, unless they are using the torpedo ones for additional ordnance.

No, actually. The order of battle rules in the various lists have no requirements to take escorts that I am aware of. That being said, fluff-wise every fleet should have some smaller ships included, and just about every fleet has some in-game role for them (although, as MGS pointed out, Chaos can easily do well without them).
