About 2 months ago I bought Micro Art studio's excellent pump house building (The one on the right in the first pix), and felt the need to compliment it with another piece. Inspired by Sean Patten and Parasitic Studio terrain work, I decided to make my own.
It consists of a plastic electrical box ($4), a Microstudio sci-fi door ($4), leftover bogey wheels and vents from a Leman Russ,
various lego pieces--(Which are indispensable for doing this kind of scratchbuild!), granny grid, plastic straws, and some unknown bitz.
I like how the electrical box has this Gothic Cathedral arch vibe on its walls, fitting perfectly into the 40K universe.
The slick surface plastic electrical box took five coats--In hindsight, I should have sanded it down first to take the paint easier. I could have spray painted it, but I hate spray fumes, and with it being winter, I can't spray outside. Gryphonne wash was used liberally throughout. I really pleased with the results, and have a plastic round electrical box in the wings to compliment the set.
As far as the function of the building, I haven't decided yet. The Tech priests only know for sure, and they aren't telling.

Heh, at first look my thought was, "What's he doing trying to pass off a professionally-made model building as a scratch build?!"
Then I read the post. Well done.

You have really gone above and over for quality. Excellent pieces which don't look like plates, toilet rolls or some weird painted foam thingy.
If you ever create a tutorial, I think many people will be there reading it.

Thanks for the kind words. But I must give credit where credit is due. Check out these two sites that not only show off great 40K terrain, but also give tutorials on using electrical boxes and such for terrain.
Sean Patten-- IMHO, this guy is a master of 40K terrain modeling. His stuff will blow your mind. Does some great stuff with game design too.

Be prepared to cast on to the landfill sites your own paltry efforts

Those are great, they look like the buildings from dawn of war (As far as i remember, only saw it being played a couple times). Great painting as well.
Question, how did you make the large pipes on the bigger building, they look too thick for drinking straws?

You missed it in my initial description. The one on the right in the first photo s a hard foam model from Microstudios, cost me $30.
But you know, I bet one could find such pipes in a hardware store. I'll have to take a look sometime.

I love using electrical boxes for terrain but too often they look like electical boxes with gubbins attached. Yours, however, looks awesome so well done!
