hi all.
this is my first attempt at blood angels and using highlighting. I'd really like some C&C as to how i can improve on my painting as there are alot better painters than i here and I really want to improve.
the colours i used are as follows... primed army painter dragon red, followed by 3 washes (baal red, devlan mud, baal red) then highlighted with a mix of vomit brown and blood red

Nice solid red you got, good job! I think your models would look alot better thought if you picked out some more details on their backpacks, chest and helm. As nice as the red is, it's abit to much of it IMO.

Woh, nice job for a first try dude, give them epic bases and your army will own. Did you get the idea for your captain from WD???

It's a lovely red, but they're not done yet. You've just started. Get to work on those details now.

hi again,
here is an updated photo taken from my iphone hence the poor lighting (my digi camera only takes remotely decent photos in daylight). I'd like to hear peoples advice and comments whether good or bad - as how else could someone improve?
thanks

Pick out their shoulder trim in black. The chest eagles went a long way, but I think that will be what makes your already attractive models look complete.

Looking a lot better. Still more detail could be used. You should paint the trim on the shoulders, and maybe look into adding some heraldry.
You're onto a great start however, I can't stress enough how wonderful that red is. Your painting is also fairly clean too.

thanks for the quick responses guys.
Brother SRM, thanks for that I guess that would further break up the red, and add to the model.
Fafnir, i've tried adding heraldry using transfers but i'm a complete novice with them and they're never "flush" to the shoulder pad. Would it be worth just painting them on instead? even just a blood drop?
thanks once again

That red you have is awesome.
i think what everyone else has said is right - pick out some more of the details, and you'll have a lovely looking army!

I've never used transfers, I just freehand mine on. Just practice on paper a few times until you can do it satisfactorally, and then paint it on the model.
Of course, in order to save your sanity, I'd recommend saving more detailed heraldry for officers, vets and sergeants. Still, a basic design on the shoulder of your basic infantry can go a long way in making them stand out.

IIRC a cotton bud helps a lot with the application of transfers, or you could just be lazy like me and buy shoulder pads from bits shops from the Death Company and Sanguinary guard to make it a bit easier.

thanks the method was really simple actually but in my case thats advantageous so i can be consistent!
other than the shoulder pads trim would there be any other suggestions on adding extra detail?
at the moment I have only got 1 tactical squad painted - so i know what works and what doesn't !! although i have a death company dread prepped and 2 rhinos in waiting...

freehand it is then! i think - like you said - i will keep them very basic so theres less room for error until i feel confident to step up to something else...now i just need to look up the heraldry/rules...
btemple0, i do actually have alot of left over shoulder pads from both those boxes but for whatever reason i seem to prefer the blander blank ones, other than on the characters... seems a bit odd i know!
