Subject: Combat Squads of Hell....
|
 |

Im having a constant issue because I am using two Storm Ravens and a 10 man Vanguard Squad.
I want to combat squad the people in my ravens so a missile launcher can stay in the back and shoot, but I was not allowed to do this if the raven is in reserve.
I was not allowed to use heroic intervention with my Vanguard squad to split them into two squads so I could assault a chimera with 5 and the attack the guys inside with the last 5.
Also I am not allowed to combat squad my 10 man squad when they deep strike with skies of blood too.
What am I doing wrong?
I have not had any luck in explaining my ravens and vanguard.

You combat squad as you deploy so if a transport is held in reserve you cannot put a combat squad in it as it has not yet deployed, you could not assault the chimera AND the squad inside anyway so combat squadding is not an issue. when you use skies of blood you have already deployed so cannot combat squad.

1) You combat squad when deploying. Reserves, as per p94, state you declare reserves INSTEAD OF deploying. So, no you cannot reserve the SR with one half of a combat squad in it
2) The easiest one is: ALL assault moves are made at the same time, meaning you cannot assault a chimera AND the guys inside it in the same turn - you have to kill the chimera in the shooting phase if you want to then have a shot at assaulting them in that turns assault phase
3) This is fine, if you do it from Reserves. You however CANNOT CS using Skies of blood, as you're already deployed, IN the SR

So I can't combat squad from reserve, but can I deploy the raven normally and place 5 guys in the back as missile shooters?
I deploy via heroic intervention two 5 man vanguard squads or one 10 man?

You cannot deploy your missile half on the table and keep the other half in reserve, you CAN keep both deployed - one in the SR on the table, one on the table by themselves.
HI - you roll for 1 unit, when you place you place 2 units anywhere on the table.

Since you combat squad when you deploy, in this case the deployment is the DS as Nos said. What you cannot do is drop the 10 man squad into play and then say ohh half are in one squad and half are in the other as you have already opted not to CS them by deploying.

I had a good 40min argument not even between me, another Blood Angel player and the judges had it out for awhile but I need to know mainly with the FAQ if I am right.
Are these correct?
1) Raven, deployed with 5 men inside. 5 in the back with a missile.
2) Raven comes in from reserver with ALL 10 inside.
3) Vanguard are rolled as one unit when deep striking. However when they hit the table they can split.
Do vanguard have to roll scatter for heroic intervention as TWO squads and land in TWO places to SPLIT into 5 man squads and assault two DIFFERENT targets.
Or
They roll for scatter as the 10 man squad and then split?
Do I have to Declare the split BEFORE the current turn, or before the game starts?
or
Split on landing?
The codex states only when they deploy they split.

1) Yes
2) Yes, remember they cannot then combat squad
3) Yes, and they roll 2 lots of scatter if they do split, can mishap separately, etc
4) See above - they are two squads AS they drop, not AFTER they drop. So 2 lots of scatter, etc
5) You decide when they are ready from reserve, as you dont decide to CS until you deploy

5) So I place the Vanguard in reserve.
When CAN I use them?
Example:
I placed them in reserve, I dont want to use them this turn.
Do I roll for there reserve or can choose to use them after my shooting phase?
If I roll dice to determine if they come in from reserve, do I have to use them or can I choose to re-roll my reserve and have them stay in reserve?
I'm really teird of them coming in turn 2 when they are waisted.

Not sure what you mean.
You have NO CHOICE when reserves come in. Starting 2nd turn you start to roll, if they turn up they turn up
If your jump pack rule allows you to reroll ANY reserve roll then yes, you can reroll a success and try to delay them. If it only allows you to failed reserve rolls then no you cannot.

You cannot choose.
A unit in Reserve must be rolled for, and it must enter if it becomes available.

I shall reroll, ah!
Ok then, I have a plan for it.
I am using jump packers.
So for a common game:
I deploy one raven with 5 out for missile support.
Reserve everything else I have:
1 Raven with 10 Tactical
10 Jump pack Assault with Astorath.
10 Jump pack Assault
10 Vanguards
Try to deploy my 10 assault via Deep Strike ASAP and leave the HQ alone.
or
Keep them in normal reserve and run them from table edge?
Should I drop the 10 assault marines?
For what?
Do I have to deploy my HQ on game start or turn one?
Im running into two main issues, my ravens are fine and the rules were unclear at first. Now the issues are:
1. Astroath is not effective with out death company to reroll wounds and he is not striking in the heart of the other players side if he is reserved.
2. My assault marines are being eaten alive by fire power at long ranges.
What I am considering is dropping all assault marines and replacing them with death company so it looks like this.
10 DC and Astorath deep strike behind enemy lines using decent of angels.
The ravens open up the tanks for Astorath and the Vanguard.
Any left over points make a death company dreadnought or librarian dreadnought.
I will redo a list real fast and get back to this.
Finally fixed, sorry.

Im not good at coding to wrap it all, it makes a mess of the copy and paste.
I apologize.

Hey guys, just as an aside. Can he even deploy the squad as 2 combat squads in the Storm Raven if he's planning on splitting it. Going by the rules you can't even have 2 different squads sitting in the same transport anyway. So if he splits them, one 5 man goes in the Storm Raven, the other gets deployed separately.
