If a troops choice is in close combat AND it has a model within 3" of an objective AND an opponent doesn't, does that unit successfully claim the objective, or is it barred from doing so because it's in close combat?

I don't think the fact that they're also in CC has any bearing on it.
The happens a lot in my games against Orks and whatnot; we've always just gone with the whole RAW line of reasoning that if there is a unit within 3 it holds the objective.

I thought there was something about not being able to claim an objective while in assault, but I can't find it. Maybe it's just something I heard, not something supported by the BRB.

Look at your comment. Back to mine. Back to yours NOW BACK TO MINE. Sadly, it isn't mine. But if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate crap it could LOOK like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You're scrolling through comments, finding the ones that your comment could look like. Back at mine, what is it? It's a highly effective counter-troll. Look again, MY COMMENT IS NOW DIAMONDS.
Anything is possible when you think before you comment or post.

Not to my knowledge, though if you can find something that says that I'll mend my ways immediately.

There is no such rule, period.
If you are within 3" of the objective, are a non-vehicle troops choice, you score.

Yep, no restrictions. It can be pinned, in combat, whatever, doesn't matter as long as it's not falling back. If it's on the table when victory conditions are tabulated, it's eligible to hold/contest an objective.

It can even be embarked in a transport. If the hull of the transport is within 3" of the objective, the embarked troops can claim it.
Helpful to remember for that last turn tank shock!

Also, a Land Raider is about 8" corner to corner. With a troops unit inside, it can score two objectives that are 12" apart. Without a unit inside, it can still contest. (3" Contest range + 8.2" width + 3" contest range = 14.2" total)
