Having toyed with the idea of Cygnar for my Warmachine army (have Circle already), i decided to check out Mercenaries. And i fell in love with Rhul. So without further ado, what do we think of this?

Any room for improvement?

General plan is get the first turn (hopefully, with +1 from 2nd tier). Pound away with artillery (who have 21" range from my back edge [3rd tier gives advance move, 4th gives extra 2" deployment), then counter with the 'jacks in melee (obv. with some 'jack shooting in between ) At some point (prob turn 2) pop madhammers super duper blast feat and there shouldnt be much left after that! (Very optimistic here! )

Are Horgenhold artillery really that good (even with Durgen's feat) that you're willing to invest in four of them?

What's the plan for if you encounter Baldur or the other Dwarf?

I would recommend an Ogrun Bokur, just in case your opponent decides to shoot back.

If you run into anyone that has ways to mitigate blst damage like digging in or 'Girded'- half your army isnt going to do much.

Also- Id suggest swapping the jack Thor is marshaling to the Avalancher. His Tune Up boosts attack or damage rolls- so if he lands that AOE with a tune up you can boost the damage for ALL the hits- not just one boost per focus like a warcaster would. He can tune up jacks hes not marshalling- but the short range of his ability limits that(and also means the Basher will outrun him after a single slam/charge).

Durgens Tiers arent all that great, advance move on your artillery units isnt really very useful. But running him with some non Rhulic mercs can be alot of fun.

Using Durgen with a Highborn list lets him take Alexia & her chosen. Of which are just about the PERFECT unit to cast Primed on. The +2 st makes them almost useful- but making them explode(pow 14!) when they die from an enemy strike. This is where you WANT your opponent to take free strikes- so run them lil skellies past the front lines to get them blown up.

Dunno about anyone else- but making troops/corpses into bombs seems very much in line with Durgens fluff

The Gavin Kyle Files article on Durgen actually has a report from a very irate Trencher/Winterguard commander (can't remember which) complaining about his use of Primed. Apparently having their allies explode when they died demoralized the employer's troops enough that while they won the battle, they weren't able to press the advantage.

Speaking from experience, Durgen is not the best caster out tehre. His feat while it looks impressive, is kinda lack luster. His tier list, also does not really work with each other. Its nice to get the point off avalanchers, but I'd advise going with Highborn and some jack marshalled regular Merc jacks instead.

I've run the tier, and found that most armies can survive the blast turn and get stuck in, where the Tier list tends to fall apart. Forge Guard are good, but they are the only thing with a punc. Avalanchers don't cut it in combat, Herne / jonne are a fun throw in instead of another Aritllery corp

Think of it this way: what is going to be hurt by All those blasts? Infantry. At 50 points you are going to see 3-4 heavy beasts and jacks and have to deal with them. Most 50 pts lists have a away around pathfinder, which is Durgen's defense by casting in hospitalible ground. The Driller is a good jack, but Durgen doesn't have the focus and lacks Gorten's Str of Granite spell to make it a power house. Most time Thor needs to turn the Drillers combat rolls, Gorten get's around this with his feat turn. The Bashier: not that great. What is great is a Wrought with Thor, then casting explosivo on it and declaring a assault, it clears infantry around jacks, plus does a lot of damage with all the boost damage rolls.

i would look into running madhammer in a highborn contract list to cover more bases. i run something like this at 50 points:

i play madhammer a bit more shooty. ive seen more combat builds work just as well, but i run him more as a ranged assassin. i put primed on the risen, and usually sit on the rest for feat turn/assassination runs.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

You need Thor for tune up on the driller that gets strength. An avalancher would be nice butt a necessity. Imo, Sam likes the nomad more but cause they are cheaper and also has reach

Okay, updated the Gorten list above.

Added Thor, gave him the gunner instead, and changed Sams 'jack from a mangler to a freebooter to make use of trash. (extra d6 damage against knocked down opponents, which the devil dogs are good at doing )

If you swap out Thors Gunner for a Blaster- you'll get alot more mileage out of Tune Up. Boosting all the damage rolls on a spray can be useful since it wont be getting any focus to do that-or can boost the att roll vs pesky high def units like gun mages. The spray will come in handy against any concealed/camo units since you dont have any other AOE to shoot at them with.
