Alright everyone. I'm in the process of trying to come up with a good SM chapter. I've been doing some fluff research on the crimson and imperial fists and I think I want them to be a crimson fists successor chapter. One reason I picked this is because I can still use the Imperial or Crimson Fist shoulder emblems. I know that's lazy but I don't have much painting experience and I think it would help ease me in to the process if I didn't have to paint a custom emblem onto every single guys shoulder.

Alright for a name I thought that the Obsidian Fists sounds kinda cool but It's not very creative so if anyone has a better idea feel free to say something.

So anyway on to the actual painting part. I used the Bolter and Chainsword marine painter to just do a mock up of a basic tactical marine from the third company. I'm gonna follow the Codex Astartes company color guide. Because of this I wanted to pick a fairly neutral color since every company would have a different color trim and other bits on vehicles and veterans and whatnot. I decided to go with codex grey because I wanted to do some highlighting but i've never done it. I feel like grey will be easier to highlight over white or black and will be more forgiving. Plus if I decide to dip some of the models it will work still (i'm assuming black dip on black marines wouldn't do too much and on white it would look messy)

Here's the basic color scheme for a 3rd Company Marine. The standard chapter colors are just chaos black and codex grey and the eye's, shoulder pads, and right knee are the company color, the 3rd companies color is mechrite red. (also sergeants, veterans, veteran sergeants, and vehicles will have the company color incorporated into them in various ways). The helmet grill, the skull and wings, and the pipe things on the stomach, as well as various other little spots will be boltgun metal. The Chapter emblem will be a black fist (same design as the imperial/crimson fists) on a round grey metallic circle (steel colored and kinda like a shield) with rivets around the edge of the circle.

What do you guys think of this? I though about starting a P&M blog but I won't be starting the actual modeling and painting for a few months. Please feel free to give me any criticism you want. I've never tried anything like this and want to be happy with my results. I feel like the color scheme is kinda dull and boring but it will be easy to paint and wash or highlight. Anyway thanks for looking this over and tell me what you think!

I like the Red pads .. and with that colour scheme an ashen/volcanic world/theme would be awesome on the bases.

That's actually a great idea! I was thinking of what I would do for the bases and was planning on just doing a basic rock/gravel kind of thing. Considering they're the obsidian fists though it would be perfect to do some cracked up volcanic rock or some ash. Maybe for the bigger models like the dreadnought I could put in some Lava streams running through the cracks in the rock and stuff like that.

I was also planning on incorporating some themes like flames, rock patterns, and lava into my vehicles so if I did the bases that way too it would all match up

Something like this might be cool for the bases:

Those bases are awesome .. but massively impractical. Imagine trying just to walk (let alone fight) on lumps of rock floating in Lava. Well, I guess Anakin Skywalker somehow did it in Revenge of the Sith .. but he's a jedi.

I've seen bases over the years which would be look like what you describe. Though it would be really easy to model your own. I would glue large grain sand to card, paint and dry brush it .. then just cut the card in 2. Glue it to base with a 1 mm gap. Paint gap skull white and then yellow and red for lava effect.

Do it .. would look awesome to the max. I have a rocky/jungle theme to my SMs. My sniper scouts are camouflaged and sit amongst foliage. They often get positive comments because of the theming.

Rock on.

I like stuff.
