As motivation to continue painting each night and working on my Chaos Daemons army I decided to create a Blog to following painting, modeling, army lists and battle reports. The blog is run through blogger, but I will be posting updates in this thread as well. I appreciate and comments and critiques you may be able to provide - hopefully at some point I will be able to stay focused and actually finish another unit!
Here is the link for those interested. (Pictures included in later posts)

A bit of an unfortunate layover on the blogging side of things (including a computer meltdown...well two of them actually!). However, here is a painting update, I am going to try to get a game in next Saturday to do a Battle Report update as well. If anyone is interested in the how of the models, feel free to ask here or on the Blog and I would be glad to share.

Seeing all the great painting at the tournament last weekend inspired me to get to it and try to work a bit each night to complete some more minis in my Daemon army. I had been working on the Fiends for about a week but I made a ton of progress over the last few days and figured I would share. I wanted to stay with my general theme for these models so they are green, and purple with dominant flesh/natural tones for the rest of the body. Here are the results...
Fiend - Front
Fiend - Left
Fiend - Right Side
Slightly different from the original, this fiend has red eyes, I plan to do different colored eyes for each (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple). Also looking at the above picture I realized I need to highlight the 'fur' on the front legs of the fiend. Finally, I mounted the legs differently for a few of them to obtain some more diverse poses on the models.
Fiend - Front
Fiend - Left
Fiend - Right
In addition to these I also have a shot of my WIP fiends (I have another 4 primed as well) and I wanted to show a bit of the 'contrast' in their progression.
Left Partly Finished - Right Two Basecoated
Left two Primed - Right Three Partly Finished
With some good painting this weekend I should finish my first set of 6 Fiends (I will show a group shot) and be able to get back to my soulgrinders. Doing these fiends has helped me understand painting the flesh tones I want a bit better and I think I will drybrush them with first Dwarf Flesh and then a finer highlight of Elf Flesh. I am still on the fence about how to paint the body itself.

Since I did not have much planned for this weekend other than spending some time with the wife I had a ton of chances to paint. This means I was able to finish my first set of 6x Fiends which I think turned out pretty well. I still need to base them (which will be done using the same basing as my Keeper of Secrets). I figure I will probably have a big basing party at some point - by party I mean I will sit home basing my minis with a few beers. Here is a group shot of the finished product.
Fiends - Group Photo
In two weeks time there is a local tournament that is 'highlander' style (those familiar with MTG will know this means all selections are 0 - 1). Instead of continuing with my next set of 6x fiends I want to get as many 'units' completed as possible. Since I have two partway completed Soulgrinders, I decided to start in on one of them. I spent the better part of today working on it and so far I have almost the entire body complete - barring some more detailing. Here are some pictures of the progress thus far.
Soulgrinder - Front
Soulgrinder - Front - Top
Soulgrinder - Rear
I experimented a bit more substantially with drybrushing for this model, working to give a 'glow' to each of the body panels and the sword. I like the interplay on the model between the organic and mechanical components and I think this contrast is very much emphasized by the contrasting colors used as well. I also delved back into NMM (non-metal metallics) for the tubing, pistons and harvester gun. I like the results thus far and I am going to work on NMM gold for the Chaos Icon embedded on the chest.
As for the legs, I am still debating the colors. I am inclined to leave a large portion of it black but maybe a very dark green or purple would be more appropriate and fit better with the rest of the model. As it stands it is too much of a 'dark clump' at the bottom and the model isn't balanced. Another option is to leave the black and highlight it with purple/green. I should have a few days before I can really sit down and paint again to consider the problem.

Thanks, I actually have not been able to get much painting in. I am in the process of looking at houses and been dedicated to brewing beer with a friend!
That said, I think I will be able to start the NMM on the SG base tonight. You going to be at Millenium on Saturday, I am going to grab my Daemons and try to find a game, maybe we can do a 2v2?

With the Soul Grinder presenting so much work, I figured I would get one mini (mostly) mentally off my plate. That is the Keeper of Secrets that I had some touch up to do and some basing to finish. the idea is that this whole army is on stage, so I added a little stage scenery to the base and I redid the sword to have a purple sheen to it rather than a central gold band like it had before. Here are the results.
Keeper of Secrets - front
Keeer of Secrets - back
I am pretty pleased with the results overall on the keeper, it was definitely a growing experience in terms of painting and modeling. The last touch I want to add is to firm up the base by putting a thin layer of clear resin over it so that it has a bit of a sheen and is protected from normal wear and tear. The other nice thing about this model is it is magnetized to the base so that I can (eventually) use it as part of a fantasy army or maybe it will have a more exotic place on its eventual display base!
I should have another update with the Soul Grinder progress tomorrow, I did not realize how far it had come until I took a look at the last set of pictures I had posted. In the future I am going to have to set some better benchmarks for myself for uploading pictures to show the overall progress.

Soul grinder - Front View
I have been plugging away at the Soul Grinder ( SG) I showed a month or so ago. To anyone who loves models with a ton of details and opportunities to practice a several different techniques...mainly dry brushing actually! Anyway, I completed some NMM gold on the front and side of the model, as well as, some NMM silver for the gun barrel. The overall model right now still has some 'blank' sections where I have not even blocked in the base coat yet, and I am waiting to finish up the main body to do those features. Here is a picture of one of the almost complete legs.
Walker Leg
This leg has the green highlighting complete and I plan to NMM silver the two blades. the chaos symbol and the bottom of the leg will be NMM Gold with the purple regions blended to a Slaaneshi pink in the center. The flesh tones blocked out need to be washed and made to look more 'fleshy' like the rest of the main body. Now that I look at it I do have a ton of work to do on it! At least the arm seen below is complete.
Soul Grinder Crushing Arm
Now that i am posting this I remember that this arm is not done, luckily you cannot see the small bit of tubing on the other side I still need to paint. I really like how this came out overall and it is too bad noone ever gets to see the Daemon face on the side of it from the table!
With some diligence this week I think I will be able to get the rest of the highlighting complete on the body (all but one leg has been blended up to the point of the final highlight in Scorpion green) so I can start in on the NMM of all the gears and blades which takes a little while but I really enjoy doing.

Finally had a chance to get some updated pics, http://purple-40k-reign.blogspot.com/2011/07/soul-grinder-and-daemon-princess-update.htmlhere is the link to the blog post to read in its native format. A teaser is included below!
Soul Grinder and Daemon Princess Update
It has been a while since my last update, my wife and I are in the process of buying a new warhammer room, I mean house, and that has taken its toll. I have not, however, been idle during that entire time (only part of it) and I have managed to ping away at the soul grinders a bit more and to get some GS done on the Daemon Princess.
Here are a pair of updates on the Soul Grinders
Soul Grinder - Front
If you have been following (or remember for that matter), I have added highlights and the blades have their basecoat for NMM silver. I also finished off some other assorted washes on the remaining flesh tones.
Soul Grinder - Rear
Another shot of the rear, this time the body is basecoated, highlighted up and washed. There is still some primer showing, but much less than before.

Blog Post at http://purple-40k-reign.blogspot.com/2011/08/soul-grinder-updates.html
A lack of rainy days this summer has hampered my painting but in spite of this I wanted to share some of my progress on a pair of Soul Grinders. I am starting to feel a bit of a time crunch, I want to have this army complete in time for Da boyz GT in Rochester at the end of October. I am hoping these two models are taking longer than the rest of my 'standard' Daemons. If not there is no way I will make my deadline!
I have yet to name my SG's, I am thinking this one will be named Lick though since I am working to incorporate a Green Stuff tongue with the model (both may have them though so any ideas of tongue related names would be good).
SG Lick-Front
Additions from last time include some more highlighting on the base a tongue GS'ed from the mouth (it only has its basecoat) and basecoating on the blades. I think I am going to change the blade color, however, and make them gold to match how the armor plates are going to look.
SG 2 - Front
This is the second SG I have been working on and the progress on him has been more significant. In this view you can see the blades and front armor plates done in NMM style. I am not super happy with how the blades came out, but I am not sure exactly how I would change them either. I held a knife up to a lamp to watch the patterns of the glow and this mimics that but I think the blending needs to be smoother. Also, they look much better when the armor plates are added to the legs - plates in the next picture.
SG-2-Plates
I really like how these are coming out. I have some more NMM silver to finish on the edging but the green glow effect turned out really well. They should look similar to this image when they are done.
SG-2-Armguard
In this picture you can see the silver skull on the SG's armguard, contrasting with the gold one from Lick. also, the shading of the recesses on the body, as well as, the armguard in green come out. In addition to this NMM I also worked to do it on the engine and gun barrel shown in the next two pics.
That is all for now, and as always tips for painting improvement are always welcome. I have really enjoyed working on these SG so far, I think they have really stretched me as a painter. The progress (in my opinion) is obvious considering I did the Engine and Armguard last, as compared to the SG blades as one of my initial NMM attempts.

I have updated with some Battle Reports and other items at the Blog link here
The newest painting post, however, can be seen below!
With work requiring so much writing lately I have taken a brief break from finishing up the Battle Reports to do some painting. I originally intended to get back to work on the Soul Grinders, but a recent announcement about an 'Ard Boyz style tournament locally has inspired me to get enough points into playing shape that I can participate.
I acquired this model almost 2 years ago, but I just have not felt ready to tackle it yet. I think now I am ready to give her a shot. I plan to keep her skin pale white, in contrast to the fleshyness of the rest of my army. Otherwise, standard colors from my army palette with the exception of the checkerboard legging/arming.
So far I have just about everything, except her accessories, basecoated with some additional work on the claws and checkerboard.
Daemon Princess - Front Profile
Daemon Princess - RHS
My current plan is to wash her skin with leviathan and then work it up using deneb stone and skull white to a very pale shade. I want to use the leviathan wash was well to help with the transition from the claws to the skin as well. The claws will get a leviathan wash, badab lack and then a drybrush highlight of Warlock Purple.
Also, you can just barely makeout the first coat on the armor of Hawk Turqiose which will be my tertiary color for this army (and the color for the third squad of Daemonettes!) Any C&C would be welcome.
Also, to relax a bit I have painted up 2 of my 3 objective markers from Da Boyz this year. I really like how these look painted up, even more than the poker chips from last year and the match my army theme as well!

My painting activities of late have been a bit mixed. Primarily because I mentally ran out of steam on some of the larger projects (the two Soul Grinders) and because I am concurrently working on a new game board - actually this is the only board I will have! I will try to provide an update on that later, but for now I want to show off a test model for my Daemonettes. Since I am at the in-laws this week for the Holidays, I thought it was best to leave the Slaanesh Daemon Princess at home, also I am debating on how to construct her wings right now, but more on that later.
In line with my 'organic' feel to the army I painted this Daemonette to have a very fleshy feel. The whole model was primed black and I used:
Flesh - Basecoat Dwarf Flesh, Wash Ogryn Flesh, Wash talons/feet Leviathon purple, drybrush Elf Flesh, drybrush Rotting Flesh
Hair - Liche Purple, 50/50 Liche Purple and Bleached Bone worked up to pure bleached bone
Armor - Hawk Turqoise, Highlight Ice Blue, Wash Asurman Blue
Claws - Deneb Stone, Bleached Bone, Skull White
Comments and criticism are welcome on this model. It is good to get the colors down here so I can remember when I go to paint the other 47...That seems like a lot, let's say the other 11 for now!
For other painting/modedling and battle reports see http://purple-40k-reign.blogspot.com/ Automatically Appended Next Post: Two updates in one day is craziness, but I have to thank the in-laws for cooking all day, listening to Christmas carols and humoring me as I spend the day painting in the corner.
With the test model successfully executed, I decided to start in on the Daemonette unit. For this unit I am taking a different tactic, mainly I am painting each miniature start to finish rather than assembly line style. This makes it a bit less tedious for me. When I do have some time while washes dry, I start the basecoats of another model.
Here are the first three models.
Tomorrow is another day at the in-laws and with some luck I can get to a Sacred Six Daemonettes completed!

With my recent move away from my previous FLGS I have found a scarcity of places to play 40k in the area. I have also had the chance to teach a few coworkers to play over the last few weeks, and in doing so required a game board. My idea for the board is to use the Warhammer Fantasy scenery to construct a small religious complex...something fit for a Daemon force to assault.
I also, really love the contrast between the old world style of Fantasy with the sci fi high tech 40k universe. Naturally, if I get into Fantasy I can use this board for fantasy games as well. Here is my first (ever) building - I magnetized the torches and the crescent moon because they looked likely to break off during game use.
Unfortunately I have not been able to complete the next 3 Daemonettes, although they are coming along. Christmas Eve and family were not as accommodating as I had hoped to painting Daemons. Go figure.

It took a bit longer than I had hoped, but I finally finished the next four Daemonettes for the unit. I really like the way the unit is turning out and I think it is going to look very striking on the table.
Daemonettes 4, 5, 6, 7 RHS
Daemonette 2
Daemonette 6
Daemonette 7
Daemonettes 4, 5, 6, and 7 Front
Daemonettes 4, 5, 6, and 7 LHS
With some luck I should be able to complete the next 5 by the end of next week and I can start basing. I have these and my Fiends from the summer to base and I am looking forward to trying out a suggestion from someone I met at Da Boyz GT.

With a little bit of eye strain from the painting (and possibly staring at too many computer screens) I now have my first complete set of Daemonettes done. This squad, the hair squad as opposed to squad Bald and squad Mohawk, came out pretty well and I learned a lot as I progressed through painting them. Without further adieu here are the final 5 and a group shot.
Finally we have our shot of the entire graduating class (you can see hints of them in the background on the pains watching the spectacle!
Some of the models are based on plasticard right now, they are magnetized to the bases because I considered making this a dual purpose fantasy/ 40k army. I am still considering it, but I am going to try using LotR or GF9 movement trays instead of magnetizing them all.
Once I get some birch bark drink stirrers, I can start constructing the wood plank floor (stage1) they will be performing on. Up next though will be a unit of 10 Horrors I have been working on, I know they are not Slaanesh but occasionally I need to field a more 'diverse' army. They will, however, keep with the fleshy slaanesh I have been going for on the rest of the army.

I don't think it counts as necromancy if it is your blog right? So here is my latest I have finished up my next set of Fiends and started a crusher with some commentary here!
It has been a while since I posted any painting. This should not be taken as a statement that I have not been painting at all. Instead, it should be taken as a statement that I have not been making much progress in my painting.
That may have to do with the birth of my daughter and her constant (adorable) demands for attention. I finally had a chance to finish (before basing) a second unit of Fiends. I think they may need one more highlight on the flesh to bring the color up, but your comments/feedback would be appreciated.
To make this a mega painting update, I also started that first Bloodcrusher (once again my daughter is interfering with my painting schedule!) and the Purple/Black base of the crusher is complete. I intend to bring the brown up to a gold color using some drybrushing to achieve that NMM effect (this is the same effect I used on the statues for the chapel). Here is what I have so far...
So this is a Bloodcrusher primed Grey with a basecoat of chaos black on the body, Liche purple on the armour plates and Snakebite for the NMM. I used shadow gray mixed with chaos black to highlight the edges, and then added more black and drybrushed the transition to make it smoother. I did not like the initial edge I had on the highlight but I think this turned out pretty well. I am tempted to use a drybrush of shadow gray to make the edges pop a bit more. For the armor I added Liche Purple to the Chaos Black/Shadow Gray mixture in two doses to shade in the dark spots and then do some more drybrushing. This I am going to highlight with some Warlock Purple.
The rider is based with Deneb Stone and is going to get a wash of Leviathon followed by more Deneb mixed with some skull white to bring up the color. I will post the finished test model tonight (hopefully) if I can get some painting in with the in-laws in town.
