Subject: Any Thoughts on Birdy The Mighty (anime)?

Have any of your enterprising cool kids seen/heard of Birdy Decode? I picked up the two seasons yesterday and made it through five or six episodes. So far, I am engaged but somewhat disappointed. I'm posting this because I know so little about the genre and want some context. As for context about me, I loved Cowboy Bebop back when and really liked the re-release of Eva. In terms of longer shows, I also enjoyed Full Metal Alchemist (have not seen Brotherhood) but was bored stupid by Gundam 00. As for my expectations of Birdy: I thought (mind you, from "judging a book by its cover") that Birdy would have more striking, stylistic visuals and music -- a la Bebop. What I've found is a show that seems more than happy to rehash anime standards (so far as I understand them) but has characters that are pretty/charismatic enough to get me through the very uneven plots. The first episode had some really interesting visuals that put me in mind of Xam'd (which I liked but the poor translation makes it nigh impossible to follow). Unfortunately, the creativity seems to take a nosedive pretty quickly. Does that sound about right?

Yeah, the New Birdy series wasn't that great.
And as a Gundam fan, 00 was crap. If you want good Gundam watch:
The 08th MS team
Gundam Wing
Turn-A Gundam
alot of Anime these days is crap for the sake of money, rather then doing something new and original. The only thing i've really enjoyed Anime-wise in the last few years has been the yearly Lupin films (Lupin VS Detective Conan ftw), Ponyo, and the Trigun film.
Super Sentai has been good lately (Shinkenger & Gokaiger, Goiseiger was meh) if you are interested in live action stuff.

Any opinion on Gundam Unicorn? I also enjoyed the first few episodes of Spice & Wolf tremendously but haven't gotten around to purchasing it. Don't get me wrong: Birdy is not bad. Keep in mind that I am one of the uninitiated but the production team here does not seemed to have challenged itself.

I would suggest watching the old Birdy The Mighty over the new series. I haven't seen Unicorn yet, its on my 'to do list'.

It's not the best, but it wasn't that bad... It was better than Seed Destiny at least XD

Released in '96, brought over by the late Central Park Media.

Many things were better then Destiny, the only way we got as far through that series as we did was watching the DVDs at 1.5 speed.

Thanks, Cyporiean! Could you explain what you found better about that version?

I recommend original Gundam Movies (what's it called now? Gundam TOS?); at least for historical context it was the first to have 'Giant Robots as Tanks' rather than 'Giant Robots as Superheroes' as a manner of speaking.
The reason I say movies is it condenses the series down so you aren't subject to filler and contains the important parts of that series.
Z Gundam is renowned for being good, if a bit grimdark.
With Birdy, I take it you saw the new Birdy? I've found not many of the new remakes live up to the originals. Even older remakes like Bubblegum Crisis.
(This is pretty scary as I remember when old Birdy was new; I never saw it myself though).
