I am building my first 40k army (Salamanders), I love the backstory but i dislike the bright green. I also want to do something with the painting that will set them apart. I am calling my army "Salamandr Ash Warriors". I know that what ever the colore scheme they will be covered in the ashes of anyone that stands in their way

I would be very thankfull for any ideas you might have.

Would you be opposed to a dark green? Then again, they'd look like Dark Angels at that point. You could paint them black with green trim to flip the scheme on its head, but black armor usually just looks lazy. You could go and paint them in an ash scheme, heavy on light greys and whites if you really wanted to.

Thank you Brother SRM. I had given the dark green a thought, as well as the ash shades of grey. With the grey I thought I would look too much like the Knights. The idea behind the Ash Warriors is that they purify the enemy in flames. I was thinking that after the battle they would rub the ashes of their enemies on their armor, kind of like a trophy. I was also thinking the they are from a volcanic planet there would be looks of ash and soot in the air and covering most everything out in the open.

Thank you again for your help

How about something akin to lava? You have a red/orange under coat, with spots of grey (ash). I say spots, but I mean more of a craggy, cracked look, so it looks like it was originally grey, with the red poking through (kinda like lava). That sounds really cool to me, and it would be very fluffy, keeping with the planet Vulkan theme.

I have gone for a similar idea. I'm not a fan of the 'bright armour' of the Blood Angels, Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, etc. So I opted for a more natural and 'realistic' colour scheme. I have modelled my SM's into a jungle terrain/theme but I'm sure the colouring can still be applied.

I believe GW no longer makes the paint I was originally using but from memory I have used Catachan Green and highlighted with Camo green. I have also used a mix of green and black inks as a wash.

How about making them Codex gray with a tint of brown wash and dark green details (like helmets and shoulder pads) ?

If you are thinking about an ashen kinda waste thing you could use this combo: Basecoat completely with Charodon granite, then follow up with a heavy drybrush of codex grey, if you want a lighter drybrush of a brighter grey, a light drybrush drybrush of white and then finish it off with a light or heavy wash of badab black wash, depending on how dark you want it. I do this on my eldar bases and it looks fantastic.

Salamanders should look like lizards or dragons. Maybe a sand/khaki coloured desert theme?

Thank you very much PraetorDave, this is a really cool idea. Thou I am thinking that going with with something darker centering each section of crag in black would look cooler.

Thanks Conandoodle, I feel the same way they make me think of the english during the American revolution.

I think dark green colors on any marines results in them resembling the Dark Angels too closely. Maybe experiment with tones and mixing them together. If they are ash warriors, Try adding codex grey to your green and see what color it makes. Also maybe test a marine or 2 with a goblin green or camo green and see if either of those two colors work for you...they will definately have more of a realistic militant feel to them. Best of Luck!

Thanks Gac666, but I am looking at something alittle darker. Have you ever seen how miners look after a long day in the mines everything covered in black soot.

Thank you rana dandra, as I try to picture this in my head I keep picturing the Brotherhood of steel from the fallout games.

I made the mistake of buying the AOBR starter so maybe I will use them to tryout the different ideas given here.

Thank you Kroothawk, when I first decided to start playing I thought I would go with army deseret cameo theme. But as I started reading about the different chapters I was drawn to the salamanders, with the sky blackened with ash I did not think that would work.

Thank you Element206, but I never really seen the Salamanders as being green to begin with.
