For the longest time I was addicted to World of Warcraft, but I think it's time to try a new online game. I don't really care for the changes they have made recently to the game. I tried Maplestory because it seemed to be the most different thing I could find. It's kind of really dull though, so that's not going to work. I don't know, are there any decent online games out there anymore? Anyone have any suggestions for an online game I could play? I don't care if it costs money or is free. I would like it to be on the computer as well. Thanks for any help I recieve!

I you don't mind a little soloing at the beginning Final Fantasy XI has a ton of things to do and a generally friendly community. Get a 360 for PC controller or a USB to PS2 converter to play it though. Well, some like the keyboard controls but I don't. It is very different than Warcraft. I may have a buddy key laying around somewhere.

Lord of the Rings online is also a good game and can be played for free, so you can try it without to much of a commitment.

If you like spreadsheets, group politics, and not much actual gaming there is always EvE online.

A 40k MMO will be released soon.

So is a Zombie MMO, which could either be hella awesome or hella garbage.

There is always Guildwars - kinda dated but no monthly fees.

Runescape - but then I'd have to hit you.

All is forgiven if repaid in Traitor's blood.

Soon is in the eye of the beholder. No release date information has been released as of yet, but from the lack of game information, it won't be a 2011 release, and lucky if it's a 2012 release.

---

For MMOs outside of WoW, there's a few.

EVE has already been mentioned, it's a bit slower moving than WoW, and far more focused on economy and politics between players.

RIFT is a new release that looked ok from what I've played of it during the Beta testing, but it was rather similar to WoW.

DC Universe Online was very different from the mold, certainly worth a look.

Dungeons and Dragons online is one I personally find entertaining, and it's free-to-play which is always a plus.

Apart from that, there's a few other free-to-plays out there (Guild Wars (Although I believe you have to buy the game, there's just no subscription fee), Runescape).

---

Most of the MMO community is eagerly awaiting either The Old Republic or Guild Wars 2 (Or both if you're me), which look like they'll be released towards the end of this year, if not the beginning of next year.

Yeah I'm looking forward to see how The Old Republic does when it comes out. And the Dark Millenium Online after that. WoW was over for me a long time ago. But I look forward to the future with hope.

The only MMO I ever played was Guild Wars (mostly because there was no monthly fee) turned out to be a really fun game. Also Guild Wars 2 is like 1-2 years away from release.

Guildwars 2 is supposed to come out this year, Q3/Q4

I've always enjoyed Everquest 2, massive world, tons of races and classes, and is really a fun game.

For something that you can jump right into, I'd suggest The Lord of the Rings Online. It's very similar to WoW, but literally every aspect is better (Except for the PVP, which you must pay monthly to have access to anyway). It's free to play, so it's no skin off your back if you want to try it. It does a great job of bringing Tolkien's world to life, and it also does a great job of making you feel like you're actually a part of that world. The class system is the most balanced I've ever seen (you'll never have trouble finding a group, no matter what class you choose), the crafting is actually viable, the quest writing is amazing, the player housing is a great addition, and the community is incredibly awesome. I suggest you give it a shot, unless you're so sick of WoW that you couldn't fathom playing anything similar. The Turbine Points system is great, as it allows you to grind for game content instead of having to pay for it.

You could play EVE if you're looking for a good sandbox game where every action you perform has an effect on the world, but unless you're up for spending hours upon hours learning the intricacies of the game and planning out your next move (spreadsheets are practically required), it's probably not for you. If you want something similar, but more immediately fun, check out Pirates of the Burning Sea. It's free to play, and it has an economy that's very similar to EVE, but it's easier to get into. It has ground combat to tide over your base MMO instincts, and I find the ship combat to be much more fun than EVE's rather basic system.

Champions Online is free to play, so if you're looking for something with extremely fast-paced combat I'd suggest checking it out. It's kind of a half-finished game, but there are very few MMOs which can boast combat this fun and engaging, as well as character creation this in-depth (unfortunately, you can't create your own classes unless you pay the monthly fee). DC Universe Online is definitely better, but it's still not worth paying for, as you'll fly through all the content in a few weeks, even at a casual rate of play.

Dungeons and Dragons Online is pretty fun if you want to get your hack and slash dungeon crawler fix. What it does, it does very well, but it's fairly limited in scope, and you won't be doing much aside from venturing into assorted dungeons, occasionally with a team. The puzzles are a nice touch, as is the narration from the 'Dungeon Master'. It really helps to get you into the game. This is also a free to play game, and as it's made by Turbine (like LOTRO), you won't have to pay a dime as long as you're willing to grind.

EverQuest II Extended (More like retracted) is also free, but it's extremely limited in comparison to the access you get with the monthly fee. Only four classes, and a lot of other limitations that are obviously designed to get you to pay SOE money. Still, the graphics hold up fairly well, character customization is pretty awesome, the crafting is still the most engaging system I've ever seen (almost on par with the combat), and there's a ton of content to play through. I haven't played much of it since the limitations are kind of depressing in comparison to the actual game, but it still might be worth a shot.

Hopefully this will be enough to sate your need for an MMO. Most of them are free, so it definitely doesn't hurt to try them out.

It's not due until late next year at the earliest.

'At the Grand Masquerade, a convention for World of Darkness fans, CCP showed the first trailer for the MMO based off that franchise. They revealed a few details about the game, too.

Ardwulf's Lair reports that the game will be Vampire-only. The substance of the trailer seems to support that. That may be a disappointment to some; the World of Darkness universe encompasses several pen-and-paper games besides Vampire: The Masquerade, such as Werewolf: The Forsaken and Mage: The Awakening. Still, as Ardwulf's Lair notes, it's possible that they could expand the scope of the game after launch.

Like CCP's other big MMO, EVE Online, the WoD MMO will focus on "player politics and social interaction." The vampires of V:TM organize themselves into clans. Perhaps players will be given some control over these organizations?

The game is still pretty far off. CCP said at the event that it would arrive during 2012 at the earliest. '

Quoted from an article on 'Gaming Blend', but there's quite a few other articles to support the information.

There's been very little information released on it, it's in about the same state as DMO... a trailer, maybe a few screenshots, and that's about it.

Spoiler:

Above is the trailer, but I'm unable to find any decent quality versions, so you'll likely have to open it on youtube if you actually want to watch it properly.

Edit: I will say that the few concept art shots...I think it's concept art and not screenshots anyway, are very well done. The one CCP is using on their site manages to look like a normal city, yet convey darkness and gloom regardless.

I doubt WoD MMO will be 'fun' or successful since the whole idea of the game is a pyramid scheme-eqsue and gernally d*cking other people over anyway. I think they will have to do a lot of work to make it successful.

Yes GW2. FTP is out october this year I believe I heard?

Somebody, about 2-3 hours ago told me that it was being developed not as an MMO anymore but instead as a Facebook game. I figured their were either an idiot or misinformed, I pray they were very very wrong.

I always thought it was Werewolf: The Apocalypse (and you forgot Hunter: The Reckoning!).

All that together would make for one badass game, though I won't be surprised if they decide to focus on Vampire: The Masquerade initially. That's possibly the most fleshed out aspect out of any WOD game, anyway.

CCP bought out White Wolf so they could have access to better quest writers and such, and I'm glad, but I hope they don't turn this into EVE 2. There needs to be a much larger focus on combat and immediate action this time around; social hierarchies and economics can definitely afford to be ancillary. I don't want to have to bust out Excel whatsoever when I'm playing a World of Darkness MMO.

One thing that could make this game very successful is the potential for a PVP system that includes more than two factions. This causes a great deal of natural balance, as the factions that aren't on top can work together (somewhat) to overthrow the largest faction in PVP. MMOs in the current age are sorely missing this feature; the only recent one I can even think of is PotBS (it's probably WoW's fault). This will draw quite a few people who've never even heard of World of Darkness to the game, if they can deliver on it.

Aye, if its pvp v's as many factions are in the game, possibly down to indivdual groups it could be massive.

Like a Vampire version of the Warriors. As long as its not a rigid Camarilla V's Sabbat structure I'll be happy. Hell chuck Camarilla, Sabbat and a couple of the more organised independants, like Setites or Giovanni, and it'd still be good.

I would love to see Garou in there, but I think its sadly highly unlikely. They had to hamstring Werewolves to 'balance' them in nwod for its 'multi-play format' with how they are set in the WoD I just can't see how they can do it.

Hunters, Wraiths are certainly possible, potentially Changelings, Mages would be an issue as well.

I suppose they could serverly tone Mages and Garou down, make Paradox really harsh, and just have Garou slightly ahead strength wise in Crinos, but otherwise no tougher than typical Kindred.

That would feel really odd in my mind though.

Well unless all the characters on the Vampire side are playing Elders, in which case they can go nuts.

I'm sure they can balance everything out. It might not match the fluff exactly, but it's really not that difficult to make everything equal. The only problem I can see is that each 'realm' will have it's own classes, and that will be hell from a game design perspective.

They will probably shoehorn everything into it's base identifier. I.E. - Werewolves vs. Vampires vs. Hunters, or whatever. Doing it any other way (having internal feuds) would be *too* many realms to deal with, and some of them would automatically be guaranteed to fail. There may be a bit of internal conflict, but forcing each 'race' to fight itself would be entirely too hectic and it would probably fall apart rather quickly, unless they use a single server like they did for EVE.
