In Your Fridge.

Hello all.

Not very long ago, i decided i wanted to try and cast some of my sculpts. When i looked over the internet, however, casting seemed very difficult, and it seemed i would have to buy tons of materials to cast the models.

So, i've come up with an idea. I dont have any plans or anything yet so you'll have to bear with me.

Firstly you'll need to stick a pouring channel and two other channels onto the head of your mini so that they point directly upwards. Then, you'll need to stick the channels to the bottom of a disposeable drinks bottle so the mini is upside-down (you may want to spray the mini with mold releasing agent now). Then fill the bottle just above the mini's feet with silicone or watever. Once the mold has set, cut down the side of the bottle to remove the one part mold you have made. Now, cut the mold in half across the channels to get a two piece mold. Now elestic band the two halves together and pour in the resin or watever.

Once that sets.... Bang.

But will it work?

C&C welcome.

-Alex.

I've just realised why this might not work lol.

Is there a way to remove the mini from the mold before you cut it in half?

Eh, why not making a 2 pieces mould to begin with? Easier and more accurate.

because i dont wanna buy clay, a molding box, and loads of other stuff. If i can remove the model, my method will be very simple.

Thanks for the comment,

It depends entirely on the shape of the model. If it's got any sort of protruding appendages (arms, legs, etc), you won't be able to make a reliable one-piece mold of it, because when you try to pull the master model out, you'll tear said arms and legs off in the mold.

You're better off spending the money to buy the clay (it's reusable over and over, you know), and some old Lego bricks to make proper mould boxes. Otherwise you'll end up wasting more money on wasted silicone mold material than you ever will on clay and Legos. The mold silicone is actually the MOST expensive part of casting.

But proper materials, and you'll get usable molds. Skip materials and steps, and you're just wasting your time.

A friend of mine did something very much like this. It starts out as one piece, but once it sets you cut the one piece mold into two pieces along the center of the model.

He was casting the parts to his own sculpt of a Greater Daemon, and it worked like a charm.

What UselessWizard said: cutting apart a mold is a legitimate way of creating a 2 part mold. But skip the pop bottle, use foam core board to make the mold box. A few dollars for boards is a whole lot easier to work with than a pop bottle.
