Hello, all. I am trying to make a 1500 point UM list right now and this will be my first army ever. Me and a buddy got into the game recently and only have a handle full of gaming experience. I was just wondering if anyone could help me with some opinions on some lists that would consist of both shooting and assaulting. I like the tanks too. As of now I have space marine librarian, Lysander, AOBR termies, AOBR tactical squad, AOBR dreadnought(which I run as an Ironclad) , land raider (Converted to redeemer), and I just purchased the Thunderfire Cannon. I already have a list that im trying to tailor but I wanted some other opinions. Any help would be much appreciated it.
Thanks.

Sterngard is my one recommendation. Load out is your option depending on what you need. They definitely lean on being anti-personnel with the bolter ammo but also due to the fact you can add 2 discounted heavy weapons, they can be used to compensate for any shortcoming in your list. The other addition would be a command squad - while costly one HQ IC and 5 command squad can quite easily sort it out as your assaulting element in your army.
I think you will eventually not like the terminators for their cost (e.g, 200 pts for 5 termies with stormbolters or 8 sterngard with the uber bolter ammo) for right now though they substitute in quite well for your assault element in your army. Seeing you are going with a thunderfire cannon and the resultant techmarine fortifying one location, look at scout snipers, devastators or sternguard to be a great firebase unit that can also take advantage of 3+ cover saves.

Hmm intresting stuff, im at work now so I cant wait till I get home and see what you guys are actually talking about. I mean I know what your talking about but I want to know it in details you know. But thanks so far for the help, I appreciate it. Also, let me ask a question. If my independent character (librarian) is joined with the termies in the redeemer and I disembark, and the enemy doesnt get the chance to assault and I dont assault either. The next turn can the librarian break off? This way i can keep using his psyker powers.

You should maybe borrow some of you buddies models and try to feel out different ways of playing before you start buying much more but i would definitely buy some more tacs

I have already placed an order to buy two squads of Tacs thats for sure. I was just thinking that if I broke the Libby off then i would still be able to cast psyker powers while standing behind the termies and attack other troops. And once I see they are getting close then I could assault the troops that are fighting the Termies.

i'm only vaguely sure for standard marines, but (at least for SW) rune priests librarians, they are pretty good at leet hunting. give em some termie or artifact armor and they are useful at cc and shooting.
again, i play SW, so my advice might be total bull.

Libbys aren't made for combat so you have the right idea but trying to keep him out...but breaking him off will just get him shot/ID by something with high strength. You can disembark your terminators however for assault and leave your Librarian inside the Raider casting Null Zone (Which will likely be your best power to use). Something with assault/shooty? I don't have AB at work but here's some thoughts in each FOC:
HQ:
Utility Libby with Null Zone and Vortex (Or Gate, just depends where he goes). Null zone is pretty much a must.
Lysander (Since you have the model....plus Lysander is the best beat stick the SM dex has)
Elite:
Thunder Terms in LR w/ MM.
Dreads with MM running behind Rhinos for 4+ saves
Suicide Stern in pod----5 combi-meltas to drop next to something and kill it
Troops:
At least 2 Tac Squads with Melta/ML in Rhinos. You can get by with 2...but at 1850 you're starting to stretch troops thin. I run two and am usually ok with combat squads.
Fast:
Speeders with MM/Hvy Flamers
Hvy:
Dakka Predators (Auto cannon Hvy Bolters). You can't beat these things for the cost, I love them.
That's an overview/base to build off of...I have a tactica in my sig too. Good luck!

Thanks for that nice explanation of the army list, I will definately take a good look at how you said I could run the army and see what works with what and if I like it. This was very helpful, thanks again.

Just an idea, but for someone starting especially, and someone playing ultramarines, Marneus Calgar makes it so you don't have to even worry about leadership at all. And of course he's super bad-a as well.

I'll be watching this thread with great interest. My colleague has invited me over to play with my "dolls" now twice. I have the AoBR Marines painted and playable and I concoct 585pts of orks to oppose. He's got the cash and I left him with the Tau, IG, and SM codicies. I think 1500 is a great starting number for him to shoot for. I want your finished list so I can hook him! Yet another innocent male with disposable income to fall into GW's deadly trap. Bwaaahaaahahahahah.
Thanks,
Dr.G

Hi
How about trying this:
You need to purchase 2 Rhinos, 1 tac squad, and one thunderfire cannon for the following list:
1500 Pts - Space Marines
HQ: Captain Darnath Lysander
HQ: Space Marine Librarian Psyker; Null Zone(or gate of infinity); The Avenger)
Elite: Terminator Squad ( aobr)
DT: 1 Land Raider Redeemer w/extra armour
Elite: Dreadnought Dreadnought CCW w/Stormbolter; Multi-Melta (aorb)
Troops: Tactical Squad ( aobr)
9 Tactical Squad, Flamer; Missile Launcher
1 Sergeant Melta Bombs; Bolt Pistol; Chainsword;
1 Rhino (new)
Troops: Tactical Squad (new)
9 Tactical Squad, Flamer; Missile Launcher
1 Sergeant; Bolter; Powerfist
1 Rhino (new)
Heavy Support: Thunderfire Cannon
Heavy Support: Thunderfire Cannon (new)
It is not waac, but it continues to build on your existing army.

well, as of now I am running the following list
HQ: Captain Darnath Lysander
HQ: Space Marine Librarian Termie Armor
Tac Squad: 1 5 man squad
1 6 man squad
(This is only because I have not assembled my other 10 man squad)
Elites: 5 man Thunder Hammer Termies
1 IronClad Dreadnought
HS: 1 Landraider Redeemer/Crusader (Going to be Magnetized)
1 Thunderfire Cannon.
Thats what I am currently running and still have a good ways to go to complete my list. I will post tomorrow (If I Remember) my complete list I am shooting for.
Comments appreciated.
