Hello fellow Dakkites.
As everyone knows, there were 20 legions to start of with, 2 of them having been lost (the II and XI) and then 8 turning traitor and the remaining 8 loyalist. Well, recently I've been designing the XI Legion because I thought having my own legion (far better than a chapter) was greater than using one already created, fluff-wise etc. Well, after roaming through Dakka I've also noticed many of you Dakkites have created your own Chapters. So, I would like anyone who views this thread and feels like leaving a comment, state what Legion/Chapter you prefer and why, heck, even include some fluff on your captain/company. DIY Legions/Chapters are especially wanted!

I think it's my common agreement that no one is really good enough to do the fluff for the lost legions so no one tries... Chapters however... are pretty damn easy to do if you have the right info and don't make them too Mary Sue For DIY stuff i prefer the chapters To read about i prefer the legions

I'm actually finding it really easy to make my own depiction of the XI Legion, super easy in fact and incredibly fun, the hardest part of it all I say would be naming all the Captains seeming as Legions had around 20 odd captains or so.

I'm not saying it's hard...
I'm saying it's hard to do right.
Creating a primarch that isn't Mary Sue whilst still being original... i wouldn't want to try and i like making up fluff.

Legions had far more than 20 captains, seeing as many legions had enough marines to feild multiple chapters at the peak of the crusade.
You may feel it is easy, but as soon as you put it on dakka, or any other forum it will get ripped to peices, people like the lost legions being exactly that, lost.
Even if GW ever did fluff for the missing legions it would still get hated on by fans.

Its not what you think, making up a Primarch that is totally original is easy to do, you just need to stay faithful in doing it.

Thanks Mr.DAKKA thats what I was going for because everyone is always making chapters and nobody ever hears of the II or XI Legions. What makes it better is that my mate is making the II Legion and that his are traitor and mine loyalist so it adds to the effect I think.

I just bought a ton of new figures just for the sole purpose of making my own chapter. It's amazing how much effort a project like this consumes and I now appreciate how much thought (well, most of the time anyway) can go in to such an enterprise. They are after all, NOT just little funny men in tin suits... they become your children... your thoughts expressed in color. Choosing a color alone took me forever... and I may change it yet once I see my choices under the light of day.
I shy away from the "lost" primarchs because that is an endeavor far and away beyond my creative comprehension. If I were to write a book , I'd try my hand at expressing what I believe to be lacking at present, but not until then.
How many Super-Uber archetypes can there be?

I agree with you there Uhlan, I've just dusted of my 5th Edition Space Hulk termies and I'm awaiting a Stormraven Gunship solely for my new Legion and yeh, they aren't little toy soldiers anymore they do become part of you, I get what you're on about.
@ Uhlan: As for the archetypes sorry but I'm lost.
@ VikingScott: Tell a bit of your Solar Knights then mate, thats why I made this thread, so people can brag about how cool their DIY SM are.

Someone on Dakka tried to have a collective project to make both lost legions... not sure what happened to it but i have a sneaky feeling it failed.

@Crimsonfist832
When I mentioned archetypes I was expressing the fact that I see all the Primarchs (and the legions as an extension) as some kind of personality/ability archetype taken to the nth degree. I understand how much creativity it would take to add to what's available and I simply don't think I could do it justice. Even if I were the only one who would see it.
@Purplefood
Nice to see other people are willing to expend precious brain cells into projects. Interesting DIY.

I've never felt the need to make my own chapter, because the Salamanders fit what I want out of Space Marines pretty perfectly.
They're heroes, plain and simple. They have their quirks - smaller numbers, different company organisation, small band of warriors searching for the lost artefacts of their Primarch, etc.
However, their actions in war are not about the Imperium, but the people living in it. They place their lives on the line in every theatre to protect the people. This is what I want out of Space Marines. That and I love the fact that they are all blacksmiths, capable of crafting their own armour and weapons.
The traitor legions is another easy choice for me. If I'm going to go with an evil force, it might as well be a force that enjoys what they do. The World Eaters just fight. No trickery, no sorcery, no exotic weapons. A chainaxe. A bolt pistol. An enemy to cleave. They go and do it.
I'm a bit miffed that lately they've been portrayed more as mindless, psychpathic killers, but I don't personally have to consider them that when I play them.

I've been messing around with the idea of a legion instead of a chapter recently, (it's actually the XI, too, who'da thunk?) and the important part is to have a unique starting ground. I actually started building mine off of indian and other desert-ish cultures once I had determined their playstyle, dubbing them the 'Juggernauts' initially, then creating a homeworld, and working backwards from the end to the beginning at that point. They're slow moving, heavy, and brutish, with quick responses.
Making a Legion is definitely harder than making a Chapter, but there's just so much more to create. I find it a lot more creative intensive.
Remember, the lost legions have done something to insult the Imperium to the point of (an equivalent to) excommunication. Mine quit the crusade early on, stole a stash of weapons and terminator armor and get lost in a warp storm, returning in M37.

Actually, they've dropped hints that the two 'lost' legions were actually folded into the Ultramarines before the Heresy. The Primarchs, no one knows.

There's actually a list of facts from the fluff about the two lost legions on Lexicanum, if anyone's interested.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Two_unknown_legions
I actually enjoyed finding ways to fit it all together, it's a great catalyst for personality, motivation, belief and can add a lot of depth and character if you come up with a proper reason why they have done the things they've done.

crazypsyko666 I've actually done the opposite to yourself, I've worked from my version of the XI (great coincidence eh?) at the start of their creation. I've detailed the rising of their primarch on the hellhole he was sent to and then their feature in the Horus Heresy. What I've also done in keeping with the fact that their records are 'expunged' is that I've said all records and data-slates of their battles, victories and appearances owned by the Emperor at that time and the High Lords now have been purposly destroyed to keep the legion safe and secret despite their includence in great wars like the Armageddon Wars, the Badab War etc.
