Hey all, I'm a long time 40ker, new to WHFB. I have wanted to play Skaven ever since I first saw the little rat dudes back when I first picked up my 2E SoB book. I'm way ahead of ya on going for plenty of mobs, but I am a little confused about what I should go with as far as warmachines/HW. I mean this generally, as I don't have enough experience to say whether I prefer one thing or another; since the Skaven weaps are awesome, I'd rather just build my horde around a good setup. So what's the deal Skaven players, or people that hate fighting the rat-folk? What should I aim for? And that was the worst accidental pun ever.

The trick is picking your teams and warmachines based around what you want the army to do. Looking to build a agressive army around a Furnace and Bell then get things like Doomwheels and PWM that can keep up with the army or hit things in the flank so your troops can win combat.
Looking to build around lots of big blocks of Slaves then get WFTs and WLCs that can deal alot more damage while your slaves die in droves.
Also a HPA should be in pretty much any army over 2000 points imho. Stick it on a flank and watch it tear through things...or get sniped by a few warmachines. The biggest thing is it can draw so much fire and deal so much damage for not alot of points.
edit: I build my army around 5 - 40 slave blocks 3 WFT and 2 WLC. The 5 blocks can take a while for most armies to chew through, and the whole time they are getting high Strength shots raining down on them while they have to stand there and murder 2 point dudes.

Am I missing something in the book or FAQs? I'm starting skaven too I dont see where Slaves can take WFT, I thought at least clan rats had to be taken for them.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

You have to use clanrats to take weapon teams, not slaves, for weapon teams I think a lot of people will say go Poiisoned wind morter over WFT because it can move and fire. 2 WLC is a good choice as is 2 PCC, between the two you can waste high armor save blocks and demolish monsters.
Other heavy hitters to look at are the HPA which is totally brutal, or the doomwheel, which is good if not quite as amazing as the abomb.

Thank you to everybody for responding . I'm generally more comfortable with CC armies. I love the Doomwheel models, and they seem pretty awesome. PWM's also seem good, though I hear you have to pack quite a few. The HPA is awesome, and would fit well with how I like to play.
At what point does a bell become obligatory for an army like that. Basically right off the bat?

The bell is only mandatory for brake-face enviroments, fun play can go without it just fine.

The thing is you really don't want to take it till you are around 2500 points. Before that you don't have enough other stuff to protect it or draw fire away from it.
