Recently, I read a post about special characters and agreed with the principle in mind: While it's fun having the named, GW-made special characters in your army, it's even more fun when you get to make your own special character with their own story, their own skills. So long as they aren't cheap and balanced in some way, I would love to see a rule that allows this concept. If there is, tell me, as I am fairly new to the game. For me, I have a few special characters in mind. So, that being said, I'm starting a thread for people to express what special characters they can make for themselves. I have a few, so I shall start off. Rules are simple right now...

The character can't be a win-button character. They can be powerful, yes, but not so much so that they can wipe out entire armies by themselves. That's wholly unfair. Cost should accurately represent their power. They can look any way you want and be in any army you'd like. It is your character, after all! Criticism is always welcome!

For my IG Army, we have Lord Commissar Johann Bucher of the 332nd Panzer Division "Emperor's Hammer"

WS: 5 BS: 5 S: 5 T: 3 W: 3 I: 4 A: 4 LD: 10 Sv: 4+

Special Rules:

Alone, unattached to a unit, Lord Commissar Bucher has Fearless, FNP, Furious Charge, Summary Execution, Aura of Discipline, Independent Character.

For the Emperor, We Fight!!

Any unit Lord Commissar Bucher is attached to gains the universal rules of Fearless and Feel No Pain. Any unit within twelve inches of Lord Commissar Bucher becomes Stubborn.

Destroy them ALL!

If Lord Commissar Bucher or a Unit he is in is losing Close Combat, roll a D6. On a 5 or 6, if there are weapons on the table under your control able to perform bombardments, they immediately target Lord Commissar Bucher or the Unit he is is and shell it without mercy, but with heavy hearts. All units automatically are removed as casualties, ignoring all cover saves, armor saves, and invulnerable rolls. This ability many ONLY be used if LOSING Close Combat.

Base Cost: 325 Points

War Gear
Carapace Armor
Bolt Pistol
Power Weapon
Force Field
Melta Bombs
Refractor Field
Krak and Frag grenades

Upgrades:

May Upgrade Bolt Pistol to:
Plasma Pistol....15 pts

May Add On Power Fist For:
30 pts

So, please comment, but don't rip into me. And please, post any character ideas you have!

No, unfortunately there are no rules alloing you to make your own official special characters. Still, that doesn't necessarily stop you from playing with them in friendly games if your opponent is ok with it.

About the Commisar - what is it that grants them FNP? Somehow feels a bit unlogic to me.
Also, the Destroy Them All-rule seems a bit woolly. Should the tanks actually attack the unit, or is it just that the unit is automatically destroyed? And also; is the enemy unit they are in combat with destroyed?

edit: forgot to put up my own SC.
Artemis Davoña, Chief Farseer of Tonesh-ian
Artemis Davoña takes up a HQ choice (unique).
Stats: Like Farseer
Equipment: The Heaven Blade, Shuriken pistol, Rune Armour (3+ Invulnerable save), Ghosthelm, Spirit Stones, Runes of Warding and Witnessing.
Psychic Powers: Guide, Doom, Fortune, Arcane Haze (see below) and Mind war.
The Heaven Blade: The Heaven Blade has been held by the Chief Farseer since the craftworld first set out, it is an ancient relic from the crone worlds and has been imbued by countless spirit stones adorning its hilt over the millenia. The Heaven Blade counts as a Witchblade that grants the wielder +1 attack. In addition, any roll of a 4 or less on a psychic test will ensure that power cannot be stopped, by any means (such as psychic hoods)
Arcane Haze: Uses the same rules as for Eldritch Storm, except that any unit affected by it has I 1 until the next turn.

Hm, you're right! What does give them Feel No Pain. Well, I figured he would have it as a Special Rule already. Unless there is a rule that I missed....

Well, the rule is a suicidal attack. It's akin to calling artillery danger-close, with the difference is the artillery is dropping on you and your attacker. Pretty much if Lord Commissar Bucher or the Unit he is in is engaging in close combat and is losing that combat (basically taking much heavier casualties), you roll the D6. If the result is a 5 or 6, the units engaged (enemy and Lord Commissar Bucher w/ or w/o unit) are automatically destroyed. It's pretty much mutual assured destruction.

....Why does he have Strength 5? That's my question. Oh, and don't forget his refractor field. That 5++ invul save is quite handy.

My special character?

Colonel Alexi Noskova, Commander of the 707th Lubyan Motor Rifle Regiment
125pts

BS: 4 WS: 4 S:3 T:3 W: 3 I: 3 A: 2 Ld: 10 Sv: 4+/5+
Wargear: Bolt Pistol, Power Sword, Carapace Armor, Refractor Field, Frag Grenades

Special Rules: Regimental Officer, Independent Character, Aura of Discipline, Stubborn, Regimental Command

Regimental Officer
As the Colonel of the regiment, Noskova is the highest ranking officer on the field. He may issue up to 3 Orders a turn with a command radius of 18". He may issue all of the orders a Company Commander may issue, along with the following special order.

For Emperor and Union!: If this order is passed, all Guardsmen in the specified unit stand to and charge in a massed infantry wave. The unit counts its lasguns as Assault 2, 12" this turn instead of Rapid Fire. This order may also be issued to vehicles (count a vehicles leadership as 8 for purpouses of receiving the order). If the vehicle passes its leadership test, it may still fire all weapons if it moves up to 6" instead of only one.

Regimental Command
No man can run an entire regiment on his own, and Colonel Noskova is now different. He is accompanied by his regimental command squad at all times. You must purchase at least 5 models from the following list to serve as the Colonel's command squad.

Master of Ordnance
See IG Codex (30 pts)

Officer of the Fleet
See IG Codex (30 pts)

Body Guard
See IG Codex (15 pts) Note: Any numberof bodyguards may be taken for the Colonel. He's just that damn important!

Master Vox Caster
The Master Vox Caster is a veteran of many a campaign, and posesses an almost magical control over the vox caster. With the Master Vox Caster, Colonel Noskova may choose to issue orders to any other unit with a vox caster on the table.
BS: 4, WS: 4, T: 3, S: 3, W:1, A: 1, Ld: 9, Sv: 4+
Wargear: Carapace Armor, Lasgun, Master Vox

Regimental Standard Bearer
The Regimental Standard bearer holds the personal standard of the Colonel for all to see. All Guardsmen within 12" of the Regimental Standard Bearer have Stubborn, and reroll all failed Leadership Checks.

Well, I figured he should be a nasty, unusual surprise to someone in Close Combat. So, I gave him a vastly higher strength. Maybe it should be 4 in stead?

S4 is Space Marine or a really burly human. I think that's okay for a Catachan-esque character (if that's how you perceive your SC) but a base S5 is super-superhuman territory (Ogryn and such). I can't see a normal human Commissar having that unless he's extensively bionic or has some other special circumstance (Colonel Straken is S6 but he's half machine, after all).

He's already got Furious Charge so S4 base sounds about right. Plus with base S5, you'll have a human being with a S10 power fist! Gazzy eat your heart out!

The only think I would maybe change would be maybe giving him EW or T4. As is, he can be instakilled pretty easily.

My Special Upgrade Ogryn Character:

One Ogryn Bone 'Ead may be upgraded to Lug the Brain for +60 points.
Lug the Brain - Ogryn Genius

BS:3 WS:5 S:5 T:5 W:3 I:2 A:4 Ld:9 Sv: 5+/5++
Wargear: Lug's Ripper Gun, Flak Armour, Refractor Field

Special Rules: Bulky, Furious Charge, Stubborn, Not What he Seems, Calculated Brutality

Not What he Seems:
While Ogryn like Nork Deddog are considered intelligent (as least when it comes to Ogryns), Lug is something quite different. A student of all sciences, he has also secretly studied forms of marital arts and hand-to-hand techniques which have made his already formidable close-combat abilities even more deadly. In addition, his grasp of technological and engineering principles has allowed him to modify both his standard-issue Ogryn wargear and even reverse-engineer a few items to make the battlefield a much more survivable place. Lug is also smart enough to realize that very bad things might happen to him if the higher-ups learned what was really going on behind his carefully-tailored vacant expression. Thankfully, since most Guardsmen assume Ogryn are thicker than the front armour on a Leman Russ, his secret is safe for now.
Lug the Brain is no normal Ogryn. The bonuses his powerful mind confers are already included in his profile.

Calculated Brutality
Lug sees every possible hand-to-hand combat scenario unfold in his mind before they take place, planning each strike with lethal, almost disturbing accuracy. Lug the Brain may reroll any failed To Hit rolls in close combat.

Lug's Ripper Gun:
Lug has modified his standard Ripper Gun to fire with fearsome stopping power at a massively increased rate. Those that joke about Ogryn Ripper Guns "always hitting" obviously haven't met Lug's pride and joy.

Lug's Ripper Gun has the following profile: Template, S5, AP-, Assault 1, Rending

Hmm... special characters I have made up include:

Big Mek Cogstompa

Same stat line as a big mek, with the exception of +1 toughness and +1 wound

Wargear:
Cogstompa's mega-kustom-supa-force field, Mek's tools, Massive zog-off choppa, slugga, Cybork body, 'eavy armour

Special rule:
Grot-lover: Due to treating grots as near equals, the other boyz regard Cogstompa with a mixture of derision and hate. When an Ork unit (excluding grots, killakans and big gunz) fire at a target within 24" of Cogstompa, any rolls of a 1 to hit 'accidentally' hit Cogstompa, even if he is in an assault at the time.

Cogstompa's mega-kustom-supa force field: Cogstompa shows a strange amount of respect to his grot assistants, and while this does not win him any points with the warboss, it means that the grots (the real brains of the workshop) have helped him 'augment' his force field. It works in the same way as a regular KFF, with the exception that all grot based units (killakans, gretchin, big gunz) get a 3+ cover save when under the KFF bubble.

Massive Zog-off choppa: Sometimes a normal big choppa is not enough... Cogstompa's choppa is counted as a big choppa, but for every player turn that he is in assault, roll a D6. On a 4-5, the weapon is treated exactly like a big choppa, on a 2-3, it counts as a relic blade. On a roll of a 1, it counts as a force weapon that adds 2 strength to the user. On a roll of 6, the weapon's unstable systems fluctuate and detonate. Place a large blast radius around Cogstompa, anyone covered by the blast (including Cogstompa himself) is hit with a S6 AP3 hit.

Total points cost: 120

That orbital bombardment rule sounds a bit off to me. It sounds over powerdas you could just throw him in and hope for the best (or in this case the worst ) so you could take out a deathstar unit or compleetly remove a unit that is on an objective.

Yes, but did you see the chars base cost? 325 points? You're sacrificing a LOT...and you'll need some extra bodies to ensure he doesn't get squished when he charges. Yeah...I don't think it's too OP.

Yeah, Lord Commissar IS expensive, which is also the reason why I made the stats the way they were. He's a deadly enemy, but he costs twice as much as TWO Lemun Russ MBT that haven't been ungraded. Plus, you do need to roll a 5 or 6 and be losing hand to hand combat. So, I figured it'd be alright. Anyways, I'm working on another special character...and this one's Chaos. Ha, ha...

And Eternal Warrior he shall be!

For the Chaos Spaces Marines or the Chaos Daemons themselves, we have a Slaanesh Daemon. She's a succubus (daemonette, whatever), but unlike your ugly ones, she isn't going to be ugly. After all, it's suppose to be seductive.

Nevan, Greater Daemonette of Slaanesh.

WS: 7 BS: 6 S: 5 T: 6 W: 3 I: 9 A: 6 Ld: 10 Sv: 4+ Invul Sv: 5++

Universal Special Rules: Eternal Warrior, Fearless, Independent Character, Feel No Pain

Special Rules

Come on, Honey...

If a enemy infantry unit or independent character is within 12" of Nevan and in line of side, roll a D6. If the result is a 4+, the enemy has been seduced by the demon's beauty and cannot assault or shoot this round. It may still move normally. If multiple enemy infantry units or independant characters are within the 12" radius around Nevan, pick one unit or independent character. This power cannot effect vehicles or any sort.

Daemon Lighting Shower

Nevan has a affinity with lightning and can all on it to destroy people and vehicles. Strength: 9. AP: 4. Range: 36". Use a Large Blast Template, roll for scatter.

The World Burns...

Nevan is also able to call on the fires of the Wrap to destroy foes in a blaze of orgasmic death and destruction. Range: Template. Strength: 5. AP: 4. Type: Heavy 1, Twin Linked

Cost: 455

Well, I don't know as much about Chaos stuff, but I do like them. Comments are welcome!

And yes, I did draw this. Art for the win!
