A Farseer casts Doom on a squad. Can you re-roll the successful wounds on the squad? This is a question because Wraithguard wounds on 2+, however 6's causes Instant Death, so you might as well take a chance and re-roll the successful wounds.

It depends on the wording.

If it states "you may reroll FAILED to-wound" then no, you can only reroll 1's (in the case of the wraithguard) as everything else wounds.

It states: "All hits caused upon that unit gain a re-roll to wound until the start of the next Eldar turn."

That seems to indicate (to me at least), that it's possible to re-roll the successful wounds.

take a look at the wording for doom on pg 28 of the eldar codex

it states that all hits caused upon the targeted unit gains a re-roll to wound

with that said...yes you can re-roll successful wounds on the doomed unit. which comes in handy when utilizing rending and instant death from wraithcannons

I did and I know. Just wasn't sure of what the definition of a re-roll was (i.e. if it was allowed after you passed what ever test you where attempting), and the rulebook didn't seem to give any answers to this either.

The BRB doesnt need to give any restrictions, it just tells you that what a reroll is.

It's up to each power to determine how the reroll works - for example Null Zone makes you reroll succesful invulnerable saves, so it would be a pointless power if the BRB stated you only could do that if you failed X

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I've always been under the impression that you could (since there is no restriction), but I've never actually been in a situation where I made the choice to do so.

I say yes.

I've always played it re-roll fails only.

This could change things considerably if it's true.

Same here, and the thought had never actually occured to me that you could re-roll successful wounds for ID.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

Answer: Yes.
Real-life example where the fact the you can re-roll something (not just re-roll a fail) has helped.
IG vs Orks in close combat. My opponent had to roll ld 4. at 1st time he successed, but he re-rolled to fail just so that he could shoot 60 shots at the squad in the next turn.

I've never thought about it before...

But as both Guide and Fortune state
"Re-roll any failed"

Then i'm inclined to agree that you could infact re-roll succesfull wounds were you so inclined.

I got another surprise:
notice how the power doesn't even specify 'enemy unit', but simply 'a unit'

"ANY" includes the special ones

That might be easier to argue for if the first sentence of the power didn't say "enemy unit". Which it does.

Just to confirm yes, doom does allow the reroll of successful wounds.

Harlies, Nightspinners, Wraithguard, D-Cannon Batteries, and Pathfinders all make very good use of this. (yes I probably missed some in the but you get the point)

This will change my play quite considerably.

I use Harlies, Wraithguard and pathfinders.

There is also the situations where your rolling to wound is much better than you planned and you didn't want to wipe your opponent out in CC (during your own CC phase) this gives you another option.

exactly, last week I decided to pull my Tyranids out of their cave and force them to take the field. my Genestealers successfully outflanked on 2nd turn thanks to the hive commander ability, and they came in on the enemy side of the table, very fortunate for me. unfortunately, the Thousand sons squad that they assaulted was wiped out allowing a second thousand son squad to shoot the crap out of my genestealers and then assault the three that were left.
