So I was watching the terrible film that is Street Fighter with Jean Claude Van Damme in it, the one from the early to mid 90's and I noticed that the character of M. Bison had a skull and Wings on his hat and looked very much like a commissar. Now I have not played any of the Street Fighter games, ever, so I don't know if this was in that format or not but I thought it curious when I saw it if it was an influence from 40k or if 40k and it found its influence in the same place.
So after that observation I am curious if any of you have noted anything that has that 40k influence in it or it could be linked to a 40k relational.
Now obviously there is tons of stuff that shares origins, and this site has tons of threads on the influences that lead to the space marines and the different aliens, starship troopers and space fantasy and all that, etc. So I'm trying to think since 40k has been here now 25 years it is certain to have some nods to it showing up in some pop culture here or there. Maybe? Or is this small bit in a cheesy movie just a fluke?

Shadaloo (Bison's organization) has that symbol and he has had that hat since street fighter was created. Street fighter has been around since about 1990 at the latest, maybe even earlier than that. I don't think 40k had ANY influence on it at all. I'm too lazy to see which actually came first, 40k or SF, but I think it's safe to say they came in around the same time-neither had any influence on the other. Now compare 40k and starcraft-40k DEFINITELY had influence on that one. There have been huge talks about that on here plenty of times.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Really, there's a rather lot of organizations, both real and fictional, that have used winged skulls as their logo. It's not precisely original.

I never said it was totally original. After all there is nothing new under the sun, just a change in packaging.

1st edition of 40K and 1st release of street fighter with both 1987, as it happens.
Of course, commissars and their uniforms came later.

The same year huh, thats pretty cool information. So that shows the global influence that they had in their development minds using similar symbolism.

I know where 40K comissars were inspired from - the point is that commissars with their current look did not appear in 40K until much later than 1987.

Blokes in black coats and peaked caps with skulls are usually emulating the nazis before all else, it's not Street Fighter and 40K influencing each other.
As a side note that was Raul Julia's last movie, he died quite young shortly after filming.
