I was wondering
a] thunder wolves any good
b] are wolf lords or leaders better and or necesseary
c] possible to play without dominating your list with thunderwolves and thunder lords

a) yes, but balanced
b) they perform better in places the pack is not so good, added together they are a nightmare
c) indeed, grey hunters, long fangs, land speeders and rune priests is considered the best units in SW codex.

I'd try to first build an army without any TWC or Thunderlords. It's amazing what you can do without them.

I run one TWC with a wolf claw and one Wolf Guard Battle Leader with a wolf claw, combi-melta and a TWC mount for counter charge shenanigans.

The two units certainly don't define my list. But, it's amazing what you can do with them.

They are good.
They can be very good when used right.
But they arn't neccessary, and there are many powerfull builds for SW with, and without taking them.

It really depends on if you like the idea of wolf mounted marines charging into the enemy lines.

Why yes indeed i do usally a tau player and starting space wolves mean i would like some cc capability.

When the codex first came out a lot of people were obsessed with an all TWC list. But now i see more and more lists that use TWC just as a supplement, using thei ability to wreck infantry after the armor is popped by either Long Fangs, or short range melta... that is what i think they work the best for. But there are a variety of ways to use them, best advice is to proxy them for a game or two and see how you like them... cause finding the models can be difficult/expensive.

A) Thunderwolves are awesome, but everyone uses them if they play SW.
B) I like them, and they seem a good way to make sure you have a strong leader.
C) Long Fangs, Speeders, and Grey Hunters alone will probably let you win.

no azrael that is not true I dont think so using a unit wolflord with claw shield saga of the warrior born necklace normal TWC with claw shield and leader claw shield necklace this sqaud totally wrecks infantrary and does not get tarpitted laughs at tarpit gets a billion extra attacks and can cut down disembarked

yeah ive read it but i think it is not necessarily rock solid in all aspects as the other competitve player on the site says thunderwolves are great

@ rovian: I didn't say it wouldn't win. It is good, but all lists need tactics or else you will fail miserably. My first battle against Chaos proves.

i think it can be just as good but back to the topic anybody have any thoughts

^Check out that thread, there was quite a lengthy debate about TWC.

IMO, I think TWC are a great unit to have. If used correctly they can pretty much wipe anything in their way. With that said, in regards to your second question, it is how you use them which will determine if you NEED a WL. The LD 10 is great, but not ALWAYS necessary. If doing a 2k SW list, then taking a Wolf Lord on TWC is a good idea, although I believe a correctly kitted out WF runs over 200 Pts, so keep that in mind. With SW, we have some of the best options in the game, from LFs to our great Grey Hunters. A well balanced SW list has a bit of everything, TWC are more of special toys like Lone Wolfs. They are there to make you a bit more lethal, but do not/should not be the core of your force.

To the fellow withouth speeders: just get some dreadnougts with multi melta, and walk them up behind your rhino's

I'm making some Thunderwolves of my own right now, they have a wicked statline but they're going to cost you a ton of points (even without special weapons).

a.) They are good, but they are quite fragile from massed fire from pinpricks or ML equivalents. Not recommended for newbes. Forget about using them if your community has no LOS blocking terrain.

b.) Most often than not, you want them spearheading a charge, so you want a lord in there: After all he is the one doing all the killing and that LD10 is a huge help. Some prefer to use them as countercharge units by keeping them lordless and cheap. Personally, id rather use dreads and lone wolves for countercharge, but thats just me.

c.) Its possible to play without dominating your list. You will get a hit on the number of Elite and Troops you can deply tho.
