The Tyranid codex lists the Tyranid Prime as being an Independent character and as such can join units if he wishes to. Normally an IC would not be able to join units that consist of a single model, ie Monstrous creature (from the rule book), but I was wondering if he would be able to join a unit consisting of a Hive Tyrant with tyrant guard?

Because the Tyrant guard are infantry, and are the majority of the unit, would this be allowed? Also this does not go against the rule book because he is not joining a unit that consists of a single model, ie Monstrous creature. But I wanted to know if this went against another rule that I have not seen yet.

Perfectly acceptable to do so. It's also known as a deathstar unit.

IC can join any unit that is not made of vehicles or only ever one model.

So if you can find a unit of MCs (make it clear this is plural) you can join an IC to them, even if you only took one (as the they can be more then one model). Now which army has a unit of three MC?

(edit for clarity)

As it has been answered before, you can even join a prime to a lonely-guardless tyrant, since it is a unit that is not always composed of a single miniature.
Primes can join this way tyrants and carnifexes as their respective broods can be (though don't have to be) composed of more than 1 model.

Edit: copy-paste mess repaired.

Actually that's not quite true. The Prime can't join a tyrant since the guard are bought as a separate unit (the tyrant is a unit consisting of a single model). However if you do pay the points for guard then the Prime is free to join.

I disagree with that interpretation on the Tyrant.

Yes, Hive Tyrants are able to join units of Tyrant Guard using the rules for ICs, but when they do, they are JOINING the Tyrant Guard unit. A 'Hive Tyrant' is always a unit comprised of a single model.

So an IC can definitely join a Tyrant Guard unit (that also has a Hive Tyrant joined to it), but I do not think it is legal for the Prime to join a lone Tyrant as that (Hive Tyrant) 'unit' is always comprised of a single model.

Ok. Thanks for the answers guys. Really helpful replies.

As a little extra question; If I had a prime with tyrant and guard, if all the guard died (through shooting attacks and allocation and all that good stuff), when only the tyrant and prime remain would they immediately split and become two separate units again? Because otherwise it would involve a prime joined with a single MC.

They cannot JOIN a unit which is always one model, but nothing states they cannot STAY joined, if they were able to join at some point.

So they stay together.

"units which always consist of a single model" can't be joined by ICs.

It doesn't matter what happens to a unit during the game. If it's a non-vehicle unit which can be taken in its codex in a count of more than one model (and doesn't have a specific prohibiting rule of its own), it's legal for an IC to join.

So a single Tyrant Guard is always legal unit to join, as you can buy units of more than 1 in the codex. A Hive Tyrant is not, however, as he can only be purchased on his own.
