The kinect isn't a high enough resolution set up to capture miniature objects well enough. People have however built setups similar to the kinect using pairs of off the shelf cameras to capture the 3D image. Nothing "new" except branding.

I'm just waiting for the day when they implement a feature that scans your room for different brands of products so that ads can be tailored to your interests/needs.
"Hello, <user name>. I see you're not wearing anything but your underwear. Would you perhaps be interested in buying pants? <recommendation of 5 different clothing stores in your vicinity>"

Well, we know that in 10 years 3D printers will be insane and we will be able to scan 40k models onto our PCs, animate them, put them into a mod and convert company of heroes to 40k

Most but there are high resolution 3D printers that can produce miniatures. GW uses one, but it would be cost prohibative for most people. Just saying we're not at a point where its cheap enough.

Branding and mass market availability without high levels of technical capability. Either way it's useless for this hobby.
