So I've decided my next army is going to be Armageddon Steel Legion using DKoK models but it's tough to find the lore for them still in print. Where is the best place outside of Lexicanum to find some of their background? Like the out of print Armageddon Codex?

Yes. Are Steel Legion models out of production?

You can still order them through the Collectors section of the GW website. I didn't want to use them because I think they are awkward looking and some of the poses are absolutely horrid and stupid. I had some extra cash laying around so I got five 10-man squads, Command Squad, Commissar, and extra weapon packs so I can full fill WYSIWYG rules.

Tactics fluff wise the Steel Legion's mechanized infantry fits the Vets in Chimera list I want to use.

You're aware that those "tactics" aren't limited to the Steel Legion, yeah?

Krieg can do the same, but for the most part they seem to not use Chimeras...in the Siege regiments.

A 'standard' Death Korps of Krieg force would likely have Chimeras at their disposal instead of the Centaurs that Siege Regiments have.

Centaurs, for lack of a better explanation, are similar to the usage of Rhinos by the Astartes: they're fast, can carry a good amount of troops and ensure those troops are in play when they're needed to force a breakthrough--which is pretty critical in sieges.

Chimeras are--at least when compared to Rhinos/Centaurs--plodding mechanical monstrosities laden with armor and guns.

To sum it up:
You don't need to base them upon the Steel Legion. Krieg, Cadia, and Mordia all have similar 'mechanized infantry' formations.

Krieg in background is rarely (If ever, I have yet to see it) seen employing veterans in chimeras. For one, their veterans are carapace armored grenadiers that follow tactics not entirely similar to standard mech veterans, and for another point, krieg almost always uses centaur transports when it can.

In short, it's both cool and fluffy for him to make a Steel Legion army. I say go for it.

Some sources I've sen Steel Legion fluff in. I love them, I just don't have the cash to make them.

That's not necessarily true.

Their "Grenadier veterans" are 'almost always used' in Centaur transports when it's too risky for them to advance across No Man's Land on foot and stealth isn't an option.

Krieg's background, by the by, has been so far relegated to three Imperial Armour books and 'Dead Men Walking'. I can't speak as to whether or not they used Chimeras in there--but it's absurd to assume that when fighting operations that are not siege operations they'd use Centaurs when they do have Chimeras available to them.

And as a sidenote: page 114 of Imperial Armour volume one. The middle Chimera is a 'Mars Pattern Chimera armed with a multi-laser. Krieg 18th Armoured Regiment during the Barbarius campaign. This vehicle is from the first squad, second platoon, first Armoured Fist Company'.

It's "cool" but "fluffy"? Eh.

Like I said: pretty much every major Guard archetype has some form of 'mech-grenadiers' setup. Many of them even had them in Imperial Armour volume one.

Maybe it's just my bias for not really liking seeing 'specific' regiments being used as stand-ins for others without a really good explanation.

Dead Men Walking is depressing...
Shows the Krieg well however.
Admittedly they were scarcely more human than the Necrons they fought...

Krieg and Steel Legion look almost exactly the same, model wise. Steel Legion is more or less a 3.0e rendition of Krieg.

Not in my eyes they don't. The coats are wrong, the gasmasks are wrong, the helmets are wrong.

But eh. Like I said, it might just be a personal bias I'm projecting.

The lasguns are different variants, the helmets are slightly different, and Krieg don't have goggles. On the other hand the most major features of both are the coats gear and masks.

I also think they're different. Obviously one is WWI and the other is WWII. I prefer the Kreig myself. Couldn't imagine ponying up all that cash and calling the Steel Legion.

They look totally different. Krieg are a mash-up of various WW1 influences like German and French/Belgian while the Steel Legion are a more straight forward styling of WW2 Fallschirmjäger.

I'm surprised someone doesn't like the Steel Legion poses, I don't think they seem silly, they are all different and each is a character. I loved my first squad.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work. The Steel Legion figs are nice, but can be a bit too static/repetitive if you were to field them as an entire army.
The DKOK seem to have the aesthetic of Steel Legion Sergeants and Commissars.
You could easily say you are representing a more elite force.

In short. Go for it!

If you went off of pure description then the only main difference is the color scheme of their two uniforms.

From Lexicanum

Steel Legion
"Guardsmen of the Steel Legion wear a uniform of mustard yellow greatcoat, heavy boots and gloves, gas-masks and rounded bowl helmets over black fatigues."

DKoK
"Appearance-wise, the Death Korps are similar to the Armageddon Steel Legion, but have darker colors, and their masks usually have a skull motif."

I know its not official fluff or anything but to me only real difference between the figs is that the DKoK models are much more detailed and realistic than the old metal Steel Legion models.
