I was playing around on army builder making a 1500 ork list to see if an idea I had would fit in with that many points. Basically would be some lootas, Two big meks with shock attack guns. 3 looted wagons and shoota boys....lots of em!
Anyway I was looking to fill 5 more points when I noticed it. Surely it had to be a joke so I looked in the codex and there It was....warbike!
Why would they give Big mek this option? It does not seem usable what so ever. Since the only good choices are either Shock Gun or KFF. Big meks with Wrenches suck noodles. They would do nothing but maybe have a semi decent assault and only be there in case someone immobilizes something.
So why the heck did they give it THAT option?

*shrug* Superfast repairs in a mobile waaaagh! perhaps? 12", fix a gun on that trukk. Next turn, 12", get that wagon rolling again.
It is a bit of a silly upgrade...

Or they wanted players to be able to represent a model they like and could have made legally in games. It's not always about what's the best choice for each unit.

I'm sure somewhere along the way one of the game developers had a mechboy on a bike and absolutely “wuved it”.

To fit in the the fluff? Meks in a Speed Freak army would want to go fast too I'm assuming.

Maybe this warbike is the big mek's pride and joy and loves to take it for a "spin" once in awhile.

I like the idea of a Mek on a bike actually. I don't think I owuld field a Mek on a bike in a serious game at all, but something about the whole idea appeals to me. Also, isn't Wazdakka a mek anyways?

Ork codex has tons of options, not all of them sensible. I suspect the games developers have something like a list of priorities when they build a new codex. Things like 'Competitiveness' and 'Commercial Viability' are probably high on that list, but those things only please a certain kind of gamer. A codex also has to have room in it for the hardcore hobbyists and casual gamers, for instance, hence the Mek rule.

Yeah, I can definitely see it as a way to get a super-mobile repair unit. Of course that was when people actually expected Battlewagons and Trukks to survive the whole game...
And yeah, Wazdakka is a Biker Mek, with the tools and everything. He even has a KMB.
One other thing I could see the Biker Mek being used for is as a really, really cheap HQ for a low-points Speed Freeks list.
