First off, I am new to WH40K.

I am building a White Scar army and want to try and save wherever I can. I found some minor savings in ebay listings for Chaos Rhinos instead of Space Marine Rhino. Does anyone know if the Chaos Rhino can be built to match the Space Marine Rhino. Much like the Dark Angels Ravenwing Battle force can be used as a more cost effective solution to 6 man space marine back squad and landspeeder?

I am not looking to play competitively anywhere. But if I do walk into a games workshop will an uprising of sticklers heckle me? The savings are minor...couple of bucks...but every little bit counts in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Nobody will mind. But have the decency to shave off all the chaos bits. It will take a fair bit of time (maybe not enough to justify the savings, I don't know, I've never built one so I don't know how much Chaos iconography there is).

But if anyone is a dick about it, they're TFG and you shouldn't play them anyway.

I just want to advise you however, WH40k is an expensive hobby (certainly not THE most expensive, by far, but it is still quite expensive). You should go in expecting to spend a considerable amount of money. And with the way GW loves to raise prices, expect the costs to get even higher.

AFAIK the Chaos items are the same as the IoM items and just have spikes included in the kit. I'm not a Chaos expert, though. The GW website may have pictures of the different sprues.

If you want to do SMs you've got three choices for cheap options.

1. Buy new from a discount seller. Save 10-15% off GW prices and get exactly what you want, brand new.

2. Buy secondhand stuff off eBay. Based on my Tyranid experience, you should be able to save 40-50% off retail. Be prepared to have to strip the models, though they will come ready built which can be a timesaver.

3. Buy non-GW figures, such as the Pig Iron System Troopers. Depending where you go, you may find stuff a lot cheaper than GW, for new figures (no stripping and so on) but they will not be allowed in a GW shop or GW tournament.

Option 2 with a bit of Option 1 is your best choice overall. I haven't looked specifically, but there should be heaps of SM stuff going cheap on eBay, because it is what most newcomers buy and most newcomers get out in a couple of years.

Kilkrazy speaks the truth. eBay has given me some crazy crazy good deals in the past, though it's hit and miss with how well it's assembled. Something else I always clean up on, locally speaking, is FLGS auctions. The one here I always bring 100 bucks to and walk away with far more than I could have gotten even on eBay. As far as your immediate Rhino issue, I'm fairly certain that the only difference is that the chaos Rhino has a single spiky sprue instead of the accessory sprue that the SM rhino has. Just cut the spikes off and file down the spots and it should be largely indistinguishable. Also, putting the havoc rocket launcher on would also probably be a bad idea.

The CSM rhino has I believe a chaos vehicle upgrade/spikey sprue instead of the imperial vehicle upgrade sprue.

Another option is to make Chibi Marines.

There are heaps of bits floating around cheap. A single Marine should cost you about 80p from buying bits. That's about 60% discount off the standard price.

The spikes in a chaos rhino are on a separate sprue so no problem there just dont install them.

I highly Suggest Chaosmailorder.com.

I ordered my DE from them, it is 25% off retail, and free shipping over $100 (I believe).

Saved me around $50.00.

The Chaos Rhino will require some shaving, as it does not come with the Space marine Accessory Sprue. It comes with the Chaos one, which has Twin-linked bolters and hatches with Chaos Iconography. A lot more trouble than it's worth really, since the difference between the two sets is only a few dollars.

Don't forget the great deals you can get on the for sale boards here and at Bartertown.

As killkrazy says, if you are willing to strip models of paint, you can get some great deals. I acquired my IG army (see the thread in my sig) at aproximately 30% of current retail and the best deals I got were on Bartertown and Dakka. I stripped alot of models. The key is to take your time and wait until what you want comes up at the price you want to pay.

There are lots of good deals out there, but getting the really GREAT deals take alot of patience and persistence.

I've aquired almost 10k points worth of stuff at the same discount Eilif did. eBay, if you can find Army Deals, really does do you good. However half the time the products are in crappy condition (I once recieved a Marine army that was incorrectly assembled and the guy used a metric ton of plastic glue. Half of it's scrapped now due to being unusable as models, so I use it for Nurgle fodder or as casualties).

Yeah, nothing like getting 100 marines that just looked badly painted at first, only to realize that they glued them together without cutting the handles off the bolters (like, just tucking them on the inside of the arm!) and having the shouldpads glued on backwards. Sigh.

At least they were metal, so I was able to salvage all the 2nd edition bodies.

I had one incident where the guy tried to glue a metal model with plastic cement. I didnt even realise it was a model until I picked it up and realised it was heavy.
