Hey everyone,

We will be hosting our 'Second Saturday' GW tournament in two weeks on Saturday, March 12. We had a good turnout last month and it was a very busy event! I'd like to thank everyone that came out and participated. I put a spot on the score sheet for each round for players to note how many turns their game went and was able to get a good idea about where things were lagging. Overall the games went to at least five turns with a few over the course of the day that went a few extra rounds thanks to random game length and a couple that went a little short; nevertheless it was nice to be able to see that data instead of having to guess. I think the super mega bonus door-prizes went over well, too!

There has been some confusion about the 40k event; suffice it to say that there was some adverse reaction to the idea of a 3k tournament and we have decided to reschedule that event so that it doesn't interfere with the regular monthly tournament. Stay tuned for more info on the 3k event as it develops however, since we still plan on hosting it at some point soon.

The March Second Saturday 40k Tournament, however, is not a 3k Tournament.

So there.

For the 40k event we will be mixing things up, however. I spoke to a number of players during the last event and over the course of the last month and we are finally going to try out a 1500 point tournament

*pause for inevitable running around, shrieking, arm waving, and dirt in hair getting

We will be running a swiss-style tournament with four rounds at 1500 points. Soft scores will still factor and contribute to a player's overall score. I am debating standardizing the games at six turns for consistency and to remove the randomness of random game length from the tournament games. If you have strong feelings about this in either direction, let me know so I can take them into consideration.

The Sportsmanship score is 0-2-4-6. Generally, everyone gives out 6s across the board, which isn't necessarily how it's supposed to work, but I am merely a humble TO, with only a limited ability to influence the masses. The Composition score is a simple Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down notation. I weighted the Comp score a bit more heavily this time around based on some conversations I had with players after the event. There will be three bonus points available to players this time around:

+1 tournament point for having a legible copy of your army list for me to keep (thanks to KC for that one!)
+1 tournament point for being at the store and ready to play by 10:00am
+1 tournament point for being back on time from lunch

For Fantasy Battle, the points have gone up to 2500, we will be running a standard three-round rogue trader style event for WHFB.

For both events there is a $10 entry (or $20 purchase) to play, and the doors will be open as of 9:00am for players to come in and get set up. I want to kick this one off as close to 10:00am as possible so we don't go too long. There will be prizes for Best Overall, Best General, Best Sportsman, and Best Army. Prizes are awarded in GW product of the winner's choice.

The prize split has been slightly amended to 70-30-25-25 for Overall, General, Army, and Sportsman respectively.

For 40k, the schedule will stick as closely as possible to the following:
9:00am - 10:00 - check-in, sign-up, event preamble, pairings
10:00am - 12:00pm - Round 1
12:00 - 12:30 - Lunch
12:30 - 2:30 - Round 2
2:30 - 4:30 - Round 3
4:30 - 6:30 - Round 4
6:45 - Winners announced

For Fantasy Battle, the schedule will look more like this:
9:00 - 10:00 - check-in, sign-up, event preamble, pairings
10:00 - 12:30 - Round 1
12:30 - 1:00 - Lunch
1:00 - 3:30 - Round 2
3:30 - 6:00 - Round 3
6:45 - Winners announced

It all goes down at Game Empire Pasadena
2302 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, CA. 91107
626-304-9333
www.gameempirepasadena.com

Please let me know here or on the tournament thread on the Game Empire forums if you're planning on attending so I can get a rough idea what to expect and not have to run around turning tables from 40k to WHFB or vice versa on the morning of the event!

Finally, if anyone out there is interested in being available as a 'ringer' for the at least the first round or two, I would be very appreciative and spiff you accordingly. Basically, you'd pay no entry fee, only have to play for the first round or two as your schedule permits, and get some swag in exchange for making sure the odd man has an actual game, instead of just free points. And if we get a even number of players, you'd be free to hang or bail as you see fit.

If you have any comments or questions, let me know here or give a call to the store, and hopefully I'll see you there!

-Dis.

Good times! I love the Game Empire store, and am a fairly new player. Even so, I wish to get my feet wet in the competitive waters and attend the tournament, so I will more than likely be there!

I will be there on the 40k side. Still on the fence as to what army I am going to play though or ? I threw my 2 cents in on the GE boards but thought I would add it here too. I think random game length is a defining part of 5th ed missions and wouldn't like to see it disappear completely. I think having it on anything less than 50% of the games would be a bad idea.

Looks great! I like the idea of a 1500 point Swiss event. Thanks for the advanced notice on this one I might try to finagle a way out there but don't save a spot or anything. I think you would do a major dis-service to 5th ed if you took random game length out of any mission based off book missions.

OW I am going to have my FLGS guy contact you about getting our results in for hte Warmaster Cup! Expect an e-mail this week sometime.

Minnesota!!!?? Jeebus. I heard you were thinking about a move, I didn't know it was quite so imminent! Come by next time you circulate back to the world out here, even if only to warm your frozen feets!

I've gotten a lot of feedback from everyone about the random game length and it has been almost universally in favor of, so it looks like I will not be removing it. 1 or 2 on turn five, here we come!

Dis and I played a 1500 point practice game on Saturday to test lists, how long 1500 point games last, and a couple other things. There should be a bat rep for it up this week on Capture and Control.

I bring it up for the random game length discussion. Often times people get annoyed because it causes the game to end early, ours went to turn 7. That may be the 6th game of 5th ed I have played that went to turn 7 and had it down to the wire the entire time. It just affirmed my belief that random game length, while annoying at times, is a good game mechanic. Hope to see you all there on Saturday!

Blackmoor left of his own accord, greener pastures and all that. Though I recall something about maybe coming back when the work is done, so there's always hope that the anti-shenanigans broom may return to sunny southern California.

There's not a painting requirement, though if you aren't fully painted (within reason, a model or two that aren't quite finished to the army standard won't count against you), you'll lose a painting point.

This is shaping up to be an old-times tournament. Others from beyond the pale have mentioned the distinct possibility of maybe thinking about trying to come out. I feel like Theoden at the muster of the Rohirrim. "More will come. We ride at first light."

Yak's Kanwall is true, and impressive. I've only ever seen it struggle against a very beyond-the-pale Daemon army with lots of non-standard stuff. And even then I think he did ok.

Since Allan was asking about it (kinda), and the timing is somewhat serendipitous, for anyone who's interested, I just put up a rundown of the paint judging criteria I use, with a discussion of each.

You can find it on Capture and Control, here: http://captureandcontrol.blogspot.com/

Hope that helps!

No love for WHFB this morning; we are however in the midst of a solid 40k smash-em-up. Pretty good split of armies:

1 Chaos Daemons
2 Guard (one Mech, one footsloggers)
3 Orks (all Kanwall! )
3 Space Marines (one Drop Pod Imperial Fist, one mixed Crimson Fists, 1 custom Blood Ravens)
1 Chaos Marines (lash princes, Plaguers, Oblits)
1 Tyranids
2 Blood Angels (both mech, one LRs, one Rhino chassis)
1 Black Templars (LR terminator rush)
2 Space Wolves (one RB spam, one TWC/LF)
1 Witch Hunters (mech)
1 Eldar (mechdar/Warwalker spam)

I'll post a wrap-up once the dust has settled both here and on http://captureandcontrol.blogspot.com/

Hey, at least he didn't spend two turns biffing the psychic test for Sanguine Sword and then die to Perils... That was his fate in a game I played about two weeks ago.
