Question is..

I know the iconography of arrows and crosses carried over to the white scar. But what about Unit markings? When reading the history only Space Marines that were from Roubi-what's his name followed the doctrine. So would the White Scars label the units? I don't want to drop squad numbers on my newly painted White Scar units if it doesn't make sense.

Thoughts?

In the background? Sorry new to 40K still...not sure I know what you mean.

I have seen on the body somewhere...typically shoulder or knee pad.

The White scars adopted the codex, so you could follow the standard scheme for markings.
Or be inspired by the existant examples and don't use numbers but different sets of "lightnings".

SO:

- different helmet color for veterans/seargents = yes.
- symbols used for tactical, assault, veteran, etc at shoulderpad = yes.
- shoulderpad rim color to mark the company = never seen any WS scheme with anything than red... guess no.
- squad number = possible, but I'd prefer different sets of "lightning stripes" for that.

1hadhq - THANK YOU! I knew about the shoulderpad rim color. Really love the idea of lightning stripes.

1 more question. What are the rules behind setting up squad number? Is there a max on how many units can be in each squad? Also, are their limitations to the type of units that can be in the different squad numbers?

Commonly codex chapters run 10 squads per company, numbered from 1-10, beginning with the Tac squads over to the assault squads and finally the devastator squads
if the company in question is a battle-company. Reserve companies may just run 1-10 squads of identical units.
Organization and sizes of squads can be found in the codex ( either SM, SW, BA, BT or DA ) and some background books like Insignium astartes, space marine hobby
compandium, etc...
Remember, its possible to use marines of the same company, but it isn't mandatory so a force of marines gathered from more than one company is possible too.
With White scars, I'd assume it depends on the value of a low squad-number. Bikers could be seen as favored, and thus receive a lower number than unmounted
marines....
