I heard through a friend, about this happening at a local tournament.

Someone playing a Chaos Demons army, had a level 4 caster, with Loremaster, for the Lore of Life, in a 900 point game...

Impossible? Only thing I could come up with, remotely close to this, is a lord with the magic hat in the BRB. But even then, he'd only be a level 2, have stupidity, and his lore would be random, along with spells.

No he couldn't have it the closest I can get to what you suggested is the blue scribes of tzeentch which can cast one spell any lore in the brb in each of its own magic faze. Or it could be Kairos fateweaver which you can't take in a 900 point game.

Yeah, the only level 4 casters are Greater Daemons (who don't fit in 900 pt games), or large blocks (36+) of Horrors.

He could have had a level 2 caster with Loremaster, and a level 4 caster - Heralds of Tzeentch have easy access to Loremaster, and Horrors are Core troops.

I would guess this is what he had as well, and your friend was just getting confused on what was level 4.

Yes easy.

Yeah, the closest thing they could have gotten would have been a lvl 2 herald of tzeentch with master of sorcery (access to all lores and loremaster). The lvl 4 could only come from having a full unit of horrors, and even then you only get the lore of tzeentch

I'm still caught off guard on the Lore of Light. I obviously don't know Chaos all to well, but it was my understanding that they had their own lore.

I'll just have to get my hands on the demons army book.

One of the Gifts says the wizard knows all spells from his chosen lore

Master of sorcery lets them pick a BRB lore and know all of it, instead of using Tzeentch

Chaos Daemons actually have three different lores; these aren't to be confused with the Warriors of Chaos, either, as the "Lore of Tzeentch" differs between the two books. And yes, just for fun, Daemons of Tzeentch can gain access to any of the core lores instead. (And then there's Kairos, but we shouldn't talk about him.)
