Subject: Ork Battlewagon with Killakannon and Burnas... overkill or just right?

So I've been making an Ork Kan Wall army, and so far it's been really effective. However I've been thinking of how to properly utilize my spare Burnas.
Now obviously Burnas are devastating, but absolutely NEED a transport. Given that I dont run a speedy army, a single Trukk will obviously be blown to bits, since the rest of my armored targets will be lagging behind(killa kans and Deff Dreads).
Thus I was considering getting a Battlewagon or two, and filling em up with Burnas and Nobs, just to have a decent fast strike option. Besides, taking out battlewagons front armor either means that they waste precious Lascannon fire which could be popping my Kans,
or they have to come within melta range, which means burna range. Besides, I find that more than 12-15 burnas would be a waste, even 10 burnas are enough to kill or cripple most anything.
So instead of wasting the extra space, wouldn't a Killakannon be a good idea? Advance the Battlewagon behind the Kans for cover(and my Mek's KFF), shooting the KillaKannon. If enemies advance, Burna em to death.
On the other hand, this works out to be really expensive. A squad of 12 Burnas and a Wagon would work out to around 320 points. Plus it takes up a heavy support choice, which I could fill with a squad of 3 more killa kans instead. I suspect the wagon could cause a lot more mayhem tho, if used correctly.
Opinions? Am I putting all my eggs in one basket here, or is this the flaming juggernaught of death it appears to be?

depends on whether your group goes for full disclosure on who is embarked on what...
If so every gun on the board will be aimed at that wagon

I've used a strategy very close to this. My friends nick named it "inferna wagon", instead of a kilkannon get a deffrolla (plus whatever upgrades you deem necessary) and ram the whole thing down the enemy's throat. I usually field two "inferna wagons" with a mix of stormboys and ork boyz. Oh, the reason you don't want the ordinance is because it's really expensive, and you can't move, therefore having a hard time flaming with that measly 8" range.

Hmmm, true that. I guess I'll have to be content with a lobber and deffrolla. It is a problem that the Battlewagon is not fast though. How do BW with Nobs fare in a Kan Wall list as support?

That sounds too expensive of a unit to be slowly coming up the field when your kans and boyz will be running and your wagon cant. I'd rather just load up on lootas if you need fire support.

Put a KFF mek in the wagon to lead your burnas and give the wagon red paint job.
It's still not fast, but it's ok, and the KFF will help soak the hits.
I have had some success with this using meganobz with kombiskorchas too, jump out, flame, assault...

Remember all that cruising speed/firing speed nonsense though. Killkannons are potentially cool, but if you use it you won't advance your Burnas fast enough.

In my experience the Killkannon is too weak for the amount of disadvantages it has. Short Range, relative low strength and ordinance does not allow any other weapons to be fired.
If I want a shooty battleweagon, I'll give it 2-4 BS and a kannon. The regular kannon can even be fired as defensiv weapon while moving, and is good against the same kind of targets you wand big shootas firing at. If you're facing lots of vehicles, you might even try 4 bazookas + kannon, though I never tried that.
In the end you should not spend too much points an a vehicle that will be blown up as soon as possible, which will be any weagon containing a big mek or a sizable unit of nobz.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |
