So I'm going to Adepticon this year and need to make a display board that I can fly with. Any pointers?

Get the shipping address to whatever hotel your staying at. 4 days prior to your travel FedEx/UPS your stuff to the hotel. Upon completion of the event, attach return label and ship it back to your home. 4 days because that gives you time to track it and make sure it arrived.
No TSA morons asking endless questions. No monkey-fist baggage handlers breaking/stealing your stuff. No exhorbitant extra baggage fees to the airline. Your stuff in insured so its not going to be sitting under 1000 pounds of other peoples junk enroute. No chance you arrive in Chi-town and your Army went to Seattle.
If you know someone local at the event yu could always ask if they will be OK having it delivered to their house.
An alternative, create a picture background for your display board, roll oi up like a poster and bring it along. Once at the event, go to a local craft store/walmart and buy a $10 dollar picture frame. Stick background poster in the frame. At the end of the event, leave picture frame with someone who wants it (or toss in trash).

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

I've never flown to a tournament, but a cheap kind of throw away display board would be a bulletin board with some sand glued to it. It will cost you like 10 dollars, you might be able to find one that fits in a big suit case, and who cares if it gets messed up? That's all I can think of.
I'm not saying shipping stuff wouldn't work, but I have had a lot of things delayed in the mail, I've never lost a checked bag. Just my experience.

I work for Fed Ex. I can tell you that a really reliable way to get your stuff is have FedEx ship it to a FedEx Office (Kinkos) location at your destination and then pick it up when you get there. It's very economical and easier than relying on the hotel to keep up with your packages for you. You can also insure it and track it as was stated above.
I do recommend that you reinforce the package, or pay a nominal fee at an office location and have the people there pack it for you. Automatically Appended Next Post: You can also go to Wal-mart and buy a dry erase board. Just glue some Styrofoam to it and modify the foam however you need to. They are already framed as well.

If you wanted to take the disposable method discussed by dkellyj, Target is within easy walking distance from the Adepticon convention site.

Shipping your stuff via FedEx is probably going to be cheaper than the baggage charge airlines are tacking onto tickets these days. One less thing to worry about while the TSA people molest you in front of everyone.
