I have been thinking of adding a Leman Russ Executioner to my guard. Looking around here I don't see it in any lists, and there isn't any talk about them. Are they just too many points, or is there somthing I'm missing in the codex? It looks like a solid tank to me.

Arm it with Plasma sponsons and watch as the Meq players remove whole squads from the table. Not really effective against armour but will murder infantry that are not in cover or maximum coherency.

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

This. I've used one before and it really does hurt MEQs.

On moon miranda.

The Imperial Guard are built off of attrition. The Executioner, while impressive, is no harder to kill than tanks that cost 40% less and also put out impressive firepower (ask marine players how often they like facing Battlecannons). So, while it puts out a lot of hurt, it doesn't tend to last much longer, and the cheaper things aren't exactly hitting like wet noodles either, and as a result it ends up sorta ruining that whole attrition principle.

They can work decently, but they are expensive enough that they aren't ultra competitive, merely "average" to "good" (on a scale of "chaos spawn, crap, bad, poor, mediocre, average, good, great, amazing, no-brainer, and outright busted). Their impact is more psychological than anything else. Situationally they can be astoundingly good (lol pre-FAQ deathwing armies) or pointless (lol heavy tanks or weeny infantry spam)

Very much this. With the Guard tank forces you should never present the enemy with just one "super-tank" as a target. It will become the target of all enemy anti-tank fire and die. End of story. Instead you should always have two or more ( non-pimped ) tanks. This forces your enemy to split his firepower and the loss of one tank does not cripple your battle line.

Thanks for thr input so far. It wouldn't be alone out there. I'm looking to expand my army, the Executioner would be the third Russ I field in that army.

In which case, still make sure the Executioner is the Ubertank that they want to kill. But yeah, the Executioner will massacret Termies and MEQs like there's no tmmrw, and can be a decent impromptu anti-light vehicle weapon. However, like most IG tanks, it's ultra specialized....it'll kick ass against MEQs, but any other build will be problematic.

I always bring one, along with a vanilla russ and a demolisher. I don't put the PC sponsons on because I dislike sponsons in general and it keeps the cost down.

Great tank, has never failed to impress me.

The LREx has been a staple of my lists, for the death it puts out. I give it plasma sponsons and a lascannon and roll with it. Even without the sponsons it's still a good choice to take out the TEQs that are everywhere.

I love the Executioner, unlike russes which can scatter away if you're unluck, it will always kill somehting. They key to keeping it alive is to have some other threats in your army, couple it with a russ or a demolisher and watch your opponent have fits trying to decide which to shoot.

the only time i've ever used one was in a 3000pt game i needed to proxy some stuff for (btw 30 marines in one squad looks impressive - even if they count as conscripts)

had that with Pask, and PC sponsons. Was death... less scatter and his Crack Shot rule made it very deadly against vehicles aswell. Was playing Marines with no landraiders, only preds and rhinos.

The Leman Russ battle tank for its price with HB sponsoons, is actually damn handy. I a fairly powerful largeblast template, and when moving 9 heavy bolter shots for a pretty modest price. I love them, and chew nasties up. Not that good at AT, but crack open transports easily.

I run one with a Demolisher, as they are both equally scarry (as EmilCrane pointed out), and they both have a rear AV of 11, which means that they are slightly hardier in HTH.

I agree about them not being quite so hot. They die, get shaken, and lose weapons just like regular russes, except they cost a lot more.

Plus, their firepower is absorbed in small blast templates which are very easy to minimize casualties against. In the end, there is a pretty narrow set of circumstances in which they really shine, which makes their high cost prohibitive.

That and compare them to a HLC+HB exterminator, and you're looking at a tank that costs the same, handles the same targets mostly as well, but is also good against hordes.

That's how my brother outfits his. Plus with 2 Basilisk there's a lot of MEQ-bustin pie-plates. I of course think the LRBT is better, but something about dropping 5 plasma cannon blasts seems so appealing, even if it isn't the best tactical choice.
