Pointless. My phone can text and make calls, has an alarm clock and a calculator. I'm all set. I don't understand the need to have smartphones or hundreds of completely pointless and unnecessary apps.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Dunno about the iPhone but Android's market is slam full of useful and free aps. There are a very few specialty ones that I've paid for but 95% of what I use are free versions. Hard to justify spending $3 on an app when all it does over the free version is pretty up the interface.

In that most smartphone aps have lots of flashing lights, make random noises but don't actually do anything useful?

I don't have a Smartphone myself, because I don't feel a need for the apps.

Everyone in my office has one, though. One girl has stopped the data contract because it was too expensive, so now she has a large, heavy stupidphone which runs out of batteries quickly.

I'm not beating a drum here, but it may be worth knowing that the Android app reservoir is tainted with malware-ridden apps.

I would probably buy an iPad 2 rather than a smartphone.

I have an N900, Nokia's last decent phone which runs a version of Linux, is basically a fully functional Linux computer and has firefox with full flash support, VLC, decent mp3 player, expandable SD storage, built in FM transmitter, flashlight LEDs, moderate quality camera, touchscreen, etc. It runs X-windows so on my home network I can connect in easily and then run any program from any of my other machines direct on the phone.

Alas, it is one of a kind and the whole line has been axed so once it dies I'll lose the freedom and flexibility of a full linux distro. My only complaints now are that it is getting a bit slow with age, is a bit ugly compared to the latest and greatest phones and interfaces and it does not run or support Java (without extensive hackery). On the plus side, I have 3 of them

This. Seriously, it's a phone, if I want something else, I'll get a laptop. They cost almost the same anyway.

While I agree to an extent with Avatar and Soladrin,I completely get that technology advances and many enjoy "keeping up with the times".
That being said,I've never been much of a "tech junkie",I grew up during the time of rotary phones and pong,so I don't feel the need to buy every new gizzmo that hits the shelves.

I have an iPhone 4, and I have to say, while I don't NEED it, I like having it. I like being able to check my email on the go, and I like being able to have the options available..... Ah well.

Oh yes, the iphone. The only mobile phone in existence that you cannot hold! You need a rubber bumper. Then Steve Jobs made excuses saying that all smart phones have the same issue!

No they bloody well don't.

One of my friends stopped using her iphone because the call quality was so gak. She keeps it for her apps! What a frackin' waste.

When I am on duty and a patient rings I instantly tell when they have an iphone - I can barely make out what they're saying.
But at least they have an app which makes fart noises. That seems to make up for the fact that it's a gak phone.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

I just upgraded my contract and now have a Samsung Galaxy, which is very nice. They do use a lot of juice, but I turn off the wireless & data connection when I'm not using them, so that helps with the battery life. In fairness the only reason I got one is that I'm the webmaster for my wife's new ecommerce site, so it will allow me to be contacted via email if there is a problem. Plus I aim to be doing more freelance design / web work so i see it as a tool.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
