I am essentially new to the hobby (back after a 15 year hiatus).

Does there exist a "model status list" of 40K codex units indicating if an actual model exists, and who produces the model (GW or FW or both).
I am specifically interested in Imperial Guard.

Well, you can start by checking the IG section on GW's website:

Off the top of my head, IG units with models you need to get from Forgeworld:
- Hydra
- Griffon
- Colossus (There's an Imperial bombard that works well enough)
- Medusa
- Vendetta (conversion kit, you can convert your own with lascannons you have)

Units with no model:
- Sergeant Bastonne
- Mogul Kamir
- Penal Legion

Everything else has a GW model, and those three without models can be converted easily enough.
