I like this movie, the only reason why I do like it is that its coming out on my birthday.
Should I go to see it with my mates? OR should I not go and spend time with my family which i have done every year thus far.
I rarely get to spend time outside of school due to my intense training.
Anyway this movie looks awesome and the Aliens kinda remind me of the Collectors in a way (From mass effect). Is this just a cop-off of Independence day? Or will it be better?
From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.
A) Looks like Skyline, Transformers and Independance Day rolled into one, which isn't necessarily good.
B) The TV trailer I keep seeing has them taking out New York, Moscow and all these other fncy places a hell-of-a-lot more defended than LA, what is so important in LA and how are they going to fight something that destroyed superior cities? At least have it attack D.C. or something.
C):
A) It's a 12A and is described as having moderate violence, sustained threat and mild language. War films, moderate violence and "darn it" instead of "Oh F***!" don't mix amazingly well, especially when there would be a LOT of swearing in something like this.
B) Due to the above, it's most likely being aimed at young teenagers, which brings its own problems in how it'll have humour that speaks to children, scenes that children need to be able to understand and nothing too overly violent or real-life; children also bring shouting, lots of loud rustling as they open their sweets, mobile phones...
That's just my view of it as it currently stands, and i'll wait for reviews of it to come out before seeing it myself.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I love how people keep saying "it looks like Skyline".
Of course it does. The people who did Skyline had originally been hired to work on Battle: Los Angeles.
They quit halfway through, churned out Skyline and are currently the target of a lawsuit because of it.
Your point is... they failed TWICE?

Might be my local bias talking, but what do you mean by "superior cities?" Are we talking culturally superior, architecturally superior, superior in size and population density or what? Also, Los Angeles has a lot of military assets within very close proximity including naval and air assets so I'd consider it under the umbrella of "well defended." From what little I have heard about the film it follows a group of Marines and wouldn't you know it there is a Marine base in between Los Angeles and San Diego, so definitely a plausible scenario to play out in the film. Finally, there are some strategic assets in Los Angeles county that invaders from space might see as a threat and try to neutralize quickly such as JPL and CalTech.

Capital cities mainly; I believe Moscow is mentioned as being destroyed... If they killed off the capital of Russia, they're certainly capable of killing off an American city, especially if the country's forces are being stretched thinly to protect everywhere else. But New York is mentioned as already being destroyed too, and NY is a powerful city and possibly one of the best known cities in the world. If they're killing off capital cities all over the place, then how will a single city in a large country that is being attacked on all sides fare any better? What makes LA more special or well-defended than every other city in America?

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

How do you not know about the center of disease control in LA? Or the Naval Base or the Maximum security bases near LA? And the Airforce base? LA is the center of Military Aspects.
New york is important but it has no strategic military forces near it. Washington D.C. Is way more important than New York. All that is in new york is the UN Buildings. Thats it.
Plus if you didn't know but the US militiary has a more advanced force than Russia, it is a preemptive attack no one would of expected it. Of course we should of been able to tell when someone was getting close due to tear's through space which are left by black holes and other bodies that travel faster than light.

Ah, gotcha, capital cities. Well as mentioned previously there are a lot of resources in and around LA that could allow it to put up a fight.

The joke answer of course is Crypts and Bloods, son. Crypts and Bloods.
If everyone knows about the military assets surrounding LA, then surely the alien forces would've known it also, yet they chose not to attack it until later on, when I assume they'd managed to gather some sort of defence (hence why it's called Battle: Los Angeles). If LA is as well defended as you say, then why wasn't it one of the first to be hit, as opposed to new York which is just a bunch of UN buildings?

Independence Day works on the level of a big, dumb event movie that can be enjoyed for the stars and the spectacle of famous places getting blown up. It doesn't really require us to take it seriously to enjoy it, and this is good because the ideas behind are too stupid to ever be taken seriously.
Battle: Los Angeles looks like it's asking us to take those ideas seriously. This isn't good.

The real question becomes how a species capable of interstellar travel can be incapable of simply destroying whatever cities they want at will. Or how a species can develop the capability of interstellar travel and not have technology decades beyond our capabilities to oppose it.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
Well, why not? We know that LA is for some reason a city that manages to survive a huge alien attack that killed off a lot of other cities with ease, but left a heavily defended city to gather a defence... Aliens aside, it just doesn't make sense.

Wasn't there a movie that had massive space ships that were made out of wood? Apparently space travel was very easy to make but humans never figured it out?

It was a short story by Harry Turtledove called 'The Road Not Taken'. Apparently, FTL and space travel is based on principles so ludicrously simple that most species develop it in the age of sail, and the most advanced space faring race considers itself the best because they have muskets, steel and telescopes, because once they'd developed FTL travel they settled into technological stagnation.
Humans were the exception in that they didn't find the technology for interestellar travel, and so spent a few hundred years developing other technology. It's actually quite a good read.

So are these the Scientology aliens, and if they are, will they be taking Tom Cruise and the rest of the Hollywood nut brigade away when they are finished?
If yes, then I bow to our new alien overlords...
