Subject: Opponent removing models to disallow IC striking in close combat

In a friendly game the other day I came across a rather interesting situation that I'd like to get some feedback on. So I assaulted a GK terminator squad with an ork nobz squad with mixed big choppas, power klaws and a warboss with a power klaw. My big choppas obviously hit first (after his terminators of course) and my opponent than removed his casualty's, removing the models basing my warboss. He than told me that my warboss could no longer attack because he was not in base to base contact with any (enemy) models. Now reading through the rule book I believe this to be correct but a rather cheap move (especially in a friendly game). I find it absurd that my warboss will just sit back and swing at air because his budy next to him killed the guy right in front of him. Suffice it to say I will at least make sure I base a special weapon or sergeant in the future to force my opponent to make a sacrifice. So I'm curious of what you all think about this and what you do tactically to limit this from happening?
Thanks all,
D

If im correct i believe you establish what models can attack at the start of the close combat phase meaning all of your models that could attack at the start of the Combat Phase would still be able to attack even if hes removed some casualties like he did.

In this case, he did it wrong.
Yes, the IC must be in base contact with an enemy to attack. But refer to page 35 under who can fight and you'll see that you work out which models can attack at the beginning of the combat.
So in this case, the warboss was engaged with the unit of GKs and unless they (the GK) are all destroyed when you get to his (the warboss') initiative, he still attacks the unit because he was engaged with them at the start of the combat.

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel

Yeah, your friend is honestly a pretty cheap guy. No offense. You check your two inch measure from any unit in base contact, and then you both agree which units can attack in close combat. Meaning that, even if he removes casualties around your warboss, before he gets to go at initiative 1, he still gets his four attacks, five on the charge. Tell your friend that it was a dick move and illegal at that.

If you've read through the rulebook and believe the move to be correct, you are ignoring the errata which makes clear that you played incorrectly.

You determine which units the IC can attack before any attacks are made. Once the dice start rolling and the attacks are made, removal of models does not change anything.

Your opponent MAY be thinking back to 4th ed, where you worked out who could fight at each I step, meaning you could, indeed, remove models from combat in this way.
5th ed explicitly changed that rule, as the designers thought it was a fairly wonky tactic, not at all what they were after from the game.

I merely reread the IC page which states the model has to be in base contact, I now know that we played it incorrectly. 3 people were kind enough to let me know in a "friendly" maner before you solkan. But regardless thank you for the link to said errata, it's much appreciated.
