All I know about Dwarves is that with the right runes their warmachines are something to fear. That and slayers, while not so good on the table, sure look awesome.

Generally there's two dwarf builds, close combat and gunline. A mix of shooting and clobbering tends not to work well as well for them as it does for other armies. Dwarves have no magic at all, (okay, some things that are sorta like magic, but not quite) so you'll need to use your units for the destruction of the enemy army, (meaning tarpits aren't as good an investment).

Shooty dwarves have hard core war machines, and very expensive ranged core units. Smackity-smack-smack dwarves have a ton of variants and wargear options, and probably the best deployment options in the game. Universally, all (except slayers) dwarf units enjoy toughness 4 and good armour saves. Here's a link to a smackity smack dwarf list I put together that doesn't put a single model on the board during the deployment phase.

Hope that was helpful, and take everything I said with a grain of salt.

Pick up a skull pass set on ebay or trade forums if you can. Then add 2 battalions, a BSB and a grudge thrower this will give you:

2 Cannons
1 OG
1 GT
74 Warriors, GW are nice, use the ones from Skull Pass in the rear as filler
32 Thunderers/Quarrellers+8Thunderers, I would do like 20 Thunderers the rest great weapon Quarrellers
Use the Thane from Skull Pass as your Runesmith/Runelord
You will also have a Slayer which is decent at protecting war machines
8 Miners to kill enemy war machines
BSB/Thane

This is a solid start and should be fine in battles up to 1500.

I would also convert about 35 of those warriors to hammerers so they can be GW warriors when you need them and hammerers when you need them. This can be done by taking the big hammer end off the hand weapon hammer on the sprues, also you can make more hammerer looking ones but cutting off the blades of the axe on the 2h models then putting a small "pin" through it adding the circular plastic from the sprue and then greenstuffing cones connecting it to the pole. I would have sent you a link but the Bugman's Brewery is down at the moment.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I needed another army like I needed another hole in my head, but after trading for a second set of Skull Pass sprues, I'm considering dropping my goblins for Dwarves. They're just so menacingly roly-poly!

One of the things that I love about FB is that I literally have seen a thread on Dakka saying "Thinking about starting [x] army" for every single army except for Wood Elves, I think.

One of the things I hate about FB is every time I read a battle report or see photos of armies, I say to myself "I'd love to have an [x] army."

Agreed guys there is maybe 2-3 40k armies I like while in Fantasy there is at least 8.

I understand completely. My least favorite army would be TK and that will probably change with the new book. I already have dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, WoC, and a small Bret force. I also want beastmen, lizardmen, and goblins. Hell, I wouldn't mind any of the armies actually.

As for dwarfs, they were my first army and I love their background. They are hardy and loyal (T4 and Ld9) so they stick around in fights. Their shooting core troops are expensive, but you are paying for a shooting unit that is hardy and loyal, that have actually stuck around for me more times than not. I would agree that a gunline is probably not the most fun or effective build, but I also think a balanced list can work.

dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, bretonnians, WOC,
space wolves, orks, eldar

Definitely agree boogeyman. A mix of close combat big units supported by decently tuned artillery is very viable for dwarfs.
