If a squad of IG guardsmen take a chimera as a DT, and the opponent kills all the infantry, do they have to destroy the vehicle as well to get the killpoint?

No, if they kill your guardmen then it worth one kill point, if they destory your chimera, then they get another kill point.

Eeeexcellent, that makes my life a whole lot easier I play against an IG player, this will help me a lot, as I don't have much that can destroy tanks.

If your opponent is also confused and disputes this, show him "Multiple Unit Choices" on page 92 of the rulebook.
