Subject: Question about Witch Hunter Zealots.
|

Been Around the Block

So I am brand new to this army and I have read a few lists that mention a unit thats not in the codex but had its datasheet and such released in WD. What I am trying to figure out is if these are tournament legal or not. I have searched around here but only found conversion and paint threads.
Page from WD:
Thanks for information ahead of time!

NOt legal, unless your tournament states that they allow WD supplements.
That's the only real answer: chances are you wont get permission to use them.

Why would you want them? take IG platoon power weapons and LD9 commissar make it the better choice. If you must you can even attach a priest (WH not IG) Best of all its codex legal (till GW final publish a new codex)

The IG platoon doesn't sound half bad.

Loved this unit. Had three max units of them when I played SOB.
Far cooler looking then IG, and very thematic.
I sold off my SOB, but I may redo them if they ever get plastics and IF the list allows some form of religious rabble unit like zealots, etc.
I'm not holding my breathe for either however...
We still field them from time to time as part of an Apocalypse Formation we created.
That being said has there been a FAQ/printed statement that states that all Chapter Approved articles are void on principle alone? Source/link?
Reason I ask is because:
1. Chapter Approved articles stated they do not need permission to use
2. That zealots CA states it may be used with Codex:Witch Hunters which is STILL the current codex at present
So yes all other CA articles are null and void because the codex they where created to be used with are now defunct, but this is not the case here.
Curious..

No, of course not - same as yuo can still use your Craftworld Eldar codex, if someone lets you.
For tournaments they normally state that WD etc are NOT valid sources, and therefore CA is invalid for *that* tournament.

CT Gamer has a point.
Other WD lists, and supplements such as Codex: Assassins, Codex: Armageddon, Codex: Eye of Terror and Codex: Craftworld Eldar are obsolete because the codices they were written to supplement are all out of print and have been replaced.
The only two exceptions I can think of appear to be Zealots for Witchhunters and the Nightspinner for Eldar. As the Codices those articles supplement are still the current ones.

You'd take these instead of a blob because of hidden powerfists.
20 Zealots = 100 pts
4 Fanatics w/Evis = 80
2 Meltaguns = 20
Demagogue w/ Evis = 35
235
30 man blob
Comm w/PW
Sgt w/MB/PW
Sgt w/MB/PW
Meltagunx3
About 270
Blob gets 12 PW attacks or 3 MB attacks (14 PW charge). Blob gets a reroll on Morale. Blobs get a 5+ save and a lasgun. Blobs can go higher than 20 guys. I usually run 30 in my powerblobs. Blobs don't have LP/CCW, so 27/54.
Zealots get 10 hidden Chainfist attacks (15 on the charge). Zealots get 1 base attack + LP/CCW. So effectively 2 attacks base or 30/45.
You can attach a Witchhunter priest to either one for rerolls on the charge.
Blob is more points effective/versatile, but against a dread or high T opponents gets stuck. Zealots would eat a dread alive.
I used to run 2-3 max Redemptionist squads during the Codex: Chapter Approved Sisters army days in 3rd edition with the updated assault rules. They were faithful, got WBB using faith and were nigh unstoppable. (You could divine guide them for 60 attacks that rend on wound 6's. Then I throw the chainfist attacks.)
Zealots lose the faithful part, which was a big draw. Also, they are only 20 guys and will die to anything that shoots at them. 5th Edition cover does help these guys out significantly though.
I really hope the new SoB codex re-adds them 'officially' so I can use them again. Right now, I gave them meltaguns and heavy weapons and they are in my guard army.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and Exterminators are fun as well, although not as effective any more. (I probably wouldn't take them now.)
Previously, with Faith, they were awesome. I get one attack per model before you swing? And they can rend? Sign me up.

Again why would you take this unit over power blobs? Ok starting with the basics ... ... we're using WH codex. ... WH lets you take IG platoons ... IG platoons cost roughly the same but with better options ... WH priest can be joined to inducted IG (and is not an IC so can't be picked out) To recap you can have a bigger unit, with power weapons, a chainfist, Special weapons, LD9 and stubborn ...Where are the fanatics any better? Ok you can't have 4 Chainfists but you can outflank!

Right, that's what I wrote. Hidden Powerfists are their only appeal right now. I even wrote 'blobs are more points effective/versatile' and that the only time you would want zealots over Blobs is dreads or high T opponents.

Yes but again if you're taking WH you can take one priest ( WH) with the blob which makes zealots redundant and massively inferior against every unit bar maybe a unit of Carnifexes or hive tyrant +guard

2/3 Chainfist attacks versus 10/15 chainfist attacks. I could multi-assault a guard parking lot and kill all of them with the Zealots. Or attack a Kan Wall and win. Or Carnifex squad, etc.
I'm not defending the Zealots as the optimal choice, just saying how you could use them, if you wanted. They suffer from many of the same problems that Repentia do.
In fact, in my post I said I wouldn't use them unless they were changed/updated.

fine ... yes you can use them ... but you really shouldn't. IG platoon does every thing better (simply getting access to special weapons squads and cheap chimeras) vs tanks you've got kraks and meltas, vs a walker you've a chain-fist and vs most other thing you've powerweapons. (Any way anything a power blob can't handle can be handle else where)

In reverse order ...
pretre wrote:I said that you shouldn't use them in every post. lol
You're post make them sound as if they are comparable, which they aren't. Against a very select minority Zealots may do better but really they can/should be dealt with else where.
pretre wrote:You just trying to get the last word in?
No i just feel the need to explain how bad a decision using them is. Less armour, less customisation, less effectiveness and out of date.
