Subject: Suggestions for 'ash' basing?

So, I'm getting to the point in some of my Necron painting that I'm about ready to start basing them.
I want them to look like they come from a world that's all dead ash. Something like the way they're pictured in the Codex, or something similar.
Any suggestions on the best way to go about achieving that effect?

1. Get some dirt and sand from your front yard
2. Spread it on a cookie sheet and bake it on low heat to dry it completely.
3. Spread white or wood glue on your base and liberally sprinkle the base with the sand.
4. After drying, paint it Chaos Black, then drybrush Codex Gray, then 50/50 Codex Gray and Fortress Gray. Give it a final wash of Badab Black or Devlan Mud.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Have you also considered making the ash part of their paintjob, sort of making their legs a bit dusty with the ash? could do that with weathering powders and it would look good in contrast to a sharp polished necron.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Some big craft shops sell coloured sand - a mixture of greys would be a reasonable stand-in for ash. And your local model railway shop may have some suitable fine-scale sand/ballast
