Weird question, but does anyone know whether GW plastic bases can be boiled without melting them? I want to use Super Sculpey for some ground effects, and it needs to be cured either in an oven or by boiling. An oven is obviously out, but boiling seemed like a possibility.

Wouldn't be hard to find out. Boil one and see.
And although I haven't ever tried it, I'm guessing by the amount of flame I've put under them before they deformed, that they are boil safe.

I strongly advise anything that could lead to melting plastic. Melting plastic is kinda sorta really poisonous. Get some green stuff and use that instead. Alternately, make your Sculpey basing as "caps" and bake those, then glue them down on the actual bases.

It WILL soften (as will any plastic that can be glued with a polystyrene cement) and if there is any weight on it when they do, they will deform and you will have a hell of a job fixing them up.

Put some gladwrap/Saranwrap on your bases.
Use the sculpey.
Carefully remove the sculpey base toppers from the bases - and peel off the plastic wrap.
Place in oven to harden.

Done.

Yes, I have done this before.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

@matphat: Sacrificing a test base is cheap, but benefiting from the collective experience of Dakka is even cheaper. =)
@Brother SRM and @chromedog: Thanks for the warnings and the tips! The gladwrap is a great idea, I'll do exactly that.
