Does the AP value of a pistol count in close combat? e.g does an ork boy get his 6+ save against a bolt pistol with AP 5?

Only shooting attacks use AP.

Pistols count as single handed Close Combat weapons in close combat. Nothing else. The actual statistics of the pistol is not relevant.

Chris - actually AP can count in combat - the Dread special character from IA9/10 has the ability to do a S5, Ap4 automatic hit in close combat. It is certainly the exception, however

As Chris said the AP only counts for shooting attacks the save would be dependent weather the model with the bolt pistol had a power weapon or some other item/rule that negates the normal save which a bolt pistol does not. The only effect of the pistol in combat is acting as a second close combat weapon for determining the number of attacks a model has.

Aww, come on At least I didn't say 'never', mum taught me well.
However, out of curiosity, does the IA specify it as a CC attack or is it just a hit? A quote would be brilliant if you have it~!

Dont have the book on me, however it a ctually requires him to sacrifice a CC attack to produce the flaming death (he's the VUlkan made dreadnought, so all the flamers in the world ), and it is performed at the same I step etc.

Yriel can also make attacks that use an AP value once per game in the Assault; I think there are 1 or 2 others.

But again, none of these are pistols(unless they come up with a model with some special rule that allows the use of the pistol profile in CC vs just hitting the enemy over the head with it).

Generally; AP is not used in CC, all attacks either: Always Allow armor saves; Always Ignore armor; or Sometimes ignore, Sometimes allow armor saves(Rending).

Cover is ignored in CC, unless otherwise stated via special Rule.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Poor pistols - nerfed again.

OMG - blocked from posting because I forgot to use a capital! Finally someone is enforcing a standard of language on the internet. Good job, Dakka.

How exactly are pistols nerfed? You get to take a pot shot on the way in and they grant +1 attack when used with most 1 handed CCW. Seem pretty balanced to me.

Did they do something awesome in previous editions that they can't do now?

Models more or less pistolwhip people in combat rather than actually fire them. you dont want to accidentally discharge and shoot yourself or your buddy in the chaos.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Ork pistols are designed with this in mind. Hitting with them at range is more of an afterthought.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so

The 40K rules for my entire youth let pistols hit with their own strength/save mod in melee.
This was great for str-3 guys with a bolt pistol (str 4) or space marines with a plasma pistol

anyway - that's long out-dated

From memory the 3rd ed Cypher rules let him not only shoot with both pistols, but count as using his plasma in CC for ignore armour, S7 goodness. I cant find the original rules anywhere to check though....
